Beautifully written piece of scholarship

McKisack has researched this era thoroughly. Her description of the reign of Edward ll was actually gripping and her view of Edward lll was compelling - a useful correction of Bishop Studds' Constitutional History which is also worth reading by the way. McKisack's scholarship and intelligence shines through each page and its supporting footnotes. I would strongly recommend this whole series from Oxford if you want to see medieval history brought to life based on sound research.

Like the rest of Oxford's History of England series, McKisack's book is a classic. It is thorough, well-indexed, and a pleasure for both casual reading and serious research. It's good to know that the book is still in print.

I know of no book that is similar to Agents of Bioterrorism in terms of making this information available to students, policymakers, scientists, and the general public.

A post-modernist deconstruction of the cytoplasmic matrix of bioterrorism.

To put it another way, it's a bit of a mess. The origins of the book are in seminars prepared by graduate students as part of a course in bioterrorism, and it shows.

The book is supposed to be a contribution to bioterrorism, so one would expect the book would consider topics of interest or relevance to those concerned with bioterrorism. The agents are all considered dangerous and are only available to recognized laboratories, so how does the bioterrorist get hold of them? What resources are needed to propagate the agent and how to obtain them? How is the bioterrorist to to protect himself? How are the agents to be collected, processed, and made ready for an attack (weaponized?) How are they to be used? Are these questions recognized and answered? Not entirely, and these are serious omissions for a book with a fly leaf saying the book is also useful for safety officials, policy makers and concerned citizens.

After an introductory chapter, each of the next 12 chapters deals with a specific pathogen or group of pathogens. Ten are from the Centers for Disease Control (CDC) list of possible biological agents, and two additional ones: influenza virus and severe acute respiratory syndrome (SARS) virus. Approximately half of the agents are viruses, and the others are bacteria. There is no mention of Rickettsia or fungi and no discussion of anti-crop or anti-livestock agents.

The chapters have a unifying structure: some discussion and history of the disease, a section labeled "molecular biology" (apparently all biology is molecular biology to the authors), diagnosis and treatment, weaponization, and defenses.

The opening sections suffer from the enthusiasm of the young writers coupled with a shaky grasp of history. For example, the chapter on flaviviruses fails to mention Yellow Fever (after which the genus is named), and its role in confounding human activities in the tropics, including handing Napoleon a major defeat. Some of the discussion is a little too a posteriori. There is also little in the way of concession to the non-scientific reader. Many terms go undefined in the text and the glossary is quite inadequate. For example, the chapter on Hantaviruses could explain that Clethrionomys glareolus is a bank vole and the chapter on anthrax could mention how the R400 bombs loaded with the agent were to deliver it. On the other hand, there is also a lack of critical thought. For example, the old chestnut about plague infected corpses being catapulted into the fort of Caffa when it was under siege is repeated. The flea vectors would have left the body as soon as it died. Those that infected the fort were most likely brought in by rats. I'm also waiting for someone to explain to me how two such different viruses as smallpox and Venezuelan equine encephalitis could be combined into a chimeric virus that would retain the pathogenic traits of both viruses.

The sections on the molecular biology are extensive reviews of the most recent developments in the molecular biology of these organisms. These sections drown us in information, but starve of us of knowledge as they are essentially irrelevant to the concept of the biological weapon. The most important information needed on the offensive and defensive sides of bioterrorism is not at the cutting edge. It is rather old-fashioned information on nutritional requirements, growth conditions and preservation, and approved treatments for infections and their complications. This is the meat and bread of textbooks of medical microbiology and infectious disease. Descriptions of the replicative cycles of viruses, or the organization of the pathogenicity islands of Yersinia pestis do not help the terrorist grow and use the agent, nor do they really help those involved in the response decide upon courses of action. There is a lot of interesting information, but it needed to be edited with a strong hand to focus on the strengths and weaknesses of the agents in the context of their use as weapons.

Sections on diagnosis and treatment are informative and useful, but again could have benefitted from better editing and there could be more emphasis on public health responses. Sections on weaponization are repetitive and could have been omitted from the chapters and replaced with an appendix. The chapter on anthrax omits the very important case of Larry Wayne Harris and how he obtained a pathogenic isolate of Bacillus anthracis.

There are four appendices dealing with drug and vaccine development, personal preparedness and information resources. The appendix on drug development is confused and spends a lot of time talking about unproven approaches or the technologies associated with them. It avoids the serious problem of nobody willing to put the time, money, and effort into developing treatments for agents that are unlikely to be used, even with offers of government funding such as the US Project BioShield. The appendix on vaccines is a useful overview and that on personal preparedness is a rehash of information available elsewhere. The appendix on information resources is more entertaining than I think the authors meant it to be. PubMed is not exactly the premier resource on bioterrorism. That honor goes, in my opinion, to ProMed: a moderated mailing list monitoring outbreaks of disease worldwide that is overseen by some of the most significant figures in medical microbiology and infectious disease.

The glossary is incomplete and even some of the definitions are inadequate and the index is a little brief. It would be nice if terms in the glossary showed some correspondence with the index.

Overall, this book has little to recommend it to anyone concerned about bioterrorism as something that could have a concrete impact on a society. It could have benefitted from a more focussed philosophy, firmer editing, and a focus on science rather than molecular biology. Someone looking for a review of the molecular biology of these organisms will find a set of reasonable reviews. Safety officials, policy makers and concerned citizens looking for guidance will do better with "Chemical and Biological Warfare: A Comprehensive Survey for the Concerned Citizen" by Eric Croddy.

Title of Book is Agents of Bioterrorism

The mailing of the envelopes with the anthrax spores just after the 9/11 World Trade Center the United States woke up to an understanding that biological warfare, in this instance bioterrorism was more than just a possibility.

Needless to say, the research community has spent a lot of time investigating the possible pathogens from the standpoints of its history, molecular biology, pathology, clinical presentation, diagnosis, weaponization and defenses. This book is basically a report on a dozen of these agents: anthrax, encephalitis, botulism, ebola, tularemia, salmonella, the plague, smallpox, influenza, SARS, hantavirus, cholera.

This material was originally orginazed for a college sminar course on microbiology and bioterrorism. In addition there are chapters of a more general nature on the philosophy, impact, biodefense, vaccines and even personal biodefenses. The chapter on each agent is written by a different specialist, but written to a common standard.

This is the most detailed look at these agents available to the general public.

I know the prequel to this book (i.e. Disappointed Hopes) has gotten many 5 star ratings. However, I do not begrudge Ms. Grafton the overall rating this gives her. It is true that it is not a story but 1/3 of a story at best, as I saw in a less favorable review of Volume I. It is also true that when I saw that I had no intention of getting sucked into a trilogy I wouldn't even be able to finish in one sitting, not to mention that it seemed like a lot to pay for a story when added up. But I ended up reading Darcy's Dilemma without realizing that I was, in fact, reading the very trilogy I wished to avoid. Ugh! to find I'd have to wait probably until some time next month. Meantime, I indulged myself with Volume I: Disappointed Hopes. It is most enjoyable reading. Like so many Jane Austen fans, it's as if I can't get enough of her. So until Volume III becomes available--presumably in the very near future, I'll have to find other Jane Austen consolations. There are many to choose from and I think I read all of them with a smile, but this is one of the better ones. Great fleshing out of characters and meshing with new ones. oh, Darcy...

If I wasn't already in-love with him, I would be reduced to a puddle of drool and worship after Vol II. I L-O-V-E this Darcy...sweet, decent, principled, handsome, rich, a great older brother, a loyal friend...and so in-love with Elizabeth, that he's willing to give her up so she can be happy with another. *sigh* and **double sigh** --he's absolutely PERFECT. Simply perfect. Based on Darcy alone, Vol II would have garnered the highest recommendation.
But then there's Lizzy, who is realizing that there is, indeed, a thin line between hate and love; and for our normally self-assured, spunky heroine, it's refreshing to see that Darcy --although unbeknownst to him-- has the power to absolutely confuse and befuddle her. Adorable.
Vol II has everything...the hold-your-breath, heart-stopping, fall-even-more-in-love, oh-no-they-didn't moments.
Bring on Vol III!!!
I will be in serious withdrawal until then...

WHEN IS VOLUME 3 COMING OUT???

I never ever saw the cliffhanger at the end coming. I really thought I was able to predict with all the little clues and hints that the author dropped throughout the book, but even though they all pointed in a particular direction, she skillfully misdirected me so that the end was a total shock. I had been watching for this book after reading Volume 1, which I had also particularly enjoyed, but the end of this has me even MORE ready to jump on the conclusion once it comes out. It was a pleasure to read such a thoughtfully well-written and creative book.

Which is fine, except when they scaled the book down they ...

I found this book in the library of the Isabella Stewart Gardner Museum and ordered it immediately. Apparently the edition in the library was the original, not revised, version, which was about twice as large as this one.

Which is fine, except when they scaled the book down they just shrunk the page layout without actually revising anything. The text has become microscopic and hard to read, and the illustrations have become muddy messes. There are printing problems here and there where the markup language is still in the text so you get "See Fig 4.3 ." and no actual figure.

While the book itself starts out very basic (like elementary school basic on terms like shape and color), each lesson is rated for difficulty and the stuff around levels 3-7 is a great quick primer for non-architects to discover how architects think. I suspect the general history of architecture section would be really great if the illustrations of the buildings were their original size.

Buyers-- if you can find the original edition used then grab it (Amazon doesn't seem to sell it)

Mr. Winters, please find yourself a new publisher and do a "restored" edition.

This is the first book about Duke Ellington's vast theatre music, and it's inCredible detailed and knowledgable. It helps to have the book written by a composer of note. Even the Duke Ellington Society raves about this one, as well they should. Music examples, great pictures. But the beauty is in the writing; between academic and pop. Brilliant - literally.

About the Author
G. Bennett Stewart, III, is a senior partner of Stern Stewart & Co. Before co-founding Stern Stewart in 1982 with Joel Stern, he was a vice president of the financial advisory arm of the Chase Manhattan Bank. The EVA® management framework was developed by Mr. Stewart and his colleagues based on years of experience advising corporate clients on valuations, restructurings/recapitalizations, acquisitions and divestitures, and management incentive compensation plans. He is a principal speaker at Stern Stewart's EVA® seminars, and also serves as an executive editor of the firm's quarterly publication, The Journal of Applied Corporate Finance. Mr. Stewart has a M.B.A. from the University of Chicago Graduate School of Business and a B.S. in Electrical Engineering from Princeton University.

Truly insightful

I read this book my senior year in undergrad as part of my finance curriculum in 2010. Now with 4 years as a finance professional, I still find myself referencing this book's most useful insights, which in my opinion is the idea that a business truly does have an "economic" value that is far more important than the book value.

When it comes to practical business valuation methodologies, especially when you consider what forms are the norm around different industries, it can be quite challenging as some other reviewers may have mentioned. Nonetheless, I have used and continue to use the concepts for comparative purposes when examining my own personal investment holdings.

I would encourage any business professional to read this book, as the main point really is that EPS is crap. You need to really think about how business decisions affect the EVA of your company. Focusing purely on cash flow, while truly important no doubt, is short-sighted. Blending the two brings you closer to the bulls eye if you want to know your company's worth - or increase the company's value.

A Holy-Priced Book, Though Not Valuation's Holy Grail

This book brings emphasis to the importance of Return on Invested Capital as a valuation metric in security analysis, although the author purports to substantially refine and expand on your prosaic understanding of this concept. It is an ambitious work that has a couple of inexplicable shortcomings, given its length, price, and its author's flair for pointing out the flaws in other valuation methods. The author makes no effort to apply his valuation methods to financial service companies (EVA is applicable to these kinds of companies, but you have to attend an EVA seminar to learn how to do that). There is no index! And there is little empirical data by researchers --outside the cult of EVA, at least-- to support some of Stewart's rather bold claims about this being a better metric for predicting stock price advancements than earnings, free cash flow, return on equity, etc.
And then there is the matter of EVA (tm) itself. Given the scarcity of objective data to support EVA as THE metric which best calibrates and predicts advancing/declining security market valuations, who really needs to embrace a somewhat complicated proprietary formula and worry about trademark infringement? For decades, Warren Buffett got by with crude, freebie valuation concepts such as return on equity, return on assets, the non-trademarked version of return on invested capital, and free cash flow. These ratios are as wonderfully easy to calculate in aggregate as EVA is hard to calculate, and the EVA enthusiast's faith that the latter proprietary concept is somehow better than the former freebie ones seems silly --although it does make for a lot of extra work (securing the future for the trademark owners, who have made a lucrative career of this stuff).
