As a young man, Dominic Jacobsen already suspects he's gay, and he gets all the confirmation he needs when a rich boy from out of town climbs into the back seat of Dominic's GTO. One night with Lamar Franklin is all it takes to convince Dominic he's found the man of his dreams. Unfortunately, that one night is all he'll get before Lamar returns to Tucson.

Fifteen years later Lamar returns to Coda, Colorado, after ending the latest in a string of bad relationships. He's alone, depressed, and plagued by late-night phone calls from an unidentified caller. Lamar's ready to give up when he comes face-to-face with his past.

Since he was 17, Dominic has dreamed of a reunion with Lamar, but that doesn't mean he's ready for it now. Facing small-town rumors and big-family drama is bad enough, but Dominic won't risk losing custody of his teenage daughter, Naomi. The only solution is to make sure he and Lamar remain friends and nothing more. Clothes stay on, no matter what.

It seems simple enough. But for better or worse, Lamar has other ideas.

ThreeandHalfStars I loved the beginning of this book
By InkedRainbowReads
ThreeandHalfStars
I loved the beginning of this book. The teenage characters came to life beautifully and I really believed in Lamar and Dominic’s furtive, tentative connection.

I didn’t enjoy their adult relationship quite as much. Actually, the relationship worked, but I’m not sure Lamar’s stalker experiences and the resulting police investigation were necessary. With two complicated adult lives to negotiate, Lamar and Dominic’s relationship was never going to be simple. Adding a crime story just seemed to detract from the character building.

I loved Dominic’s daughter - her world-view was so wonderfully simple!

There were so many good things about this book, but I think I’ve just come to expect more from Marie Sexton. Her “Promises” is one of my all time favourite m/m books and a re-read on bad days. “Shotgun” just failed to pack the emotional punch I expect from her books.

Both Dominic and Lamar were attractive, engaging men, but I didn’t fall for either one of them. Dominic was irrationally frightened of his family and Lamar let himself get walked over too often. Human and real? Yes. But neither man makes a great romantic lead.

Marie Sexton’s books are always readable and always enjoyable. “Shotgun” isn’t my favourite of her books, but it is still better than the majority of recent m/m offerings.

I was given this in return for an honest review by Inked Rainbow Reads.

Return to Coda
By C Green
This story returns to the feel of the first Coda book, Promises. I love how this author never writes the same characters. Each is unique and complex in their own way and she teaches you to love them. They may be gay but each coming out and coming into their own story is different. They come out at different ages, with different parents, different circumstances.

This story is set in Coda again. It is fun to see old characters through new eyes. The reader knows them but the new characters are still trying to figure them out and their confusion is fun to read.

Both main characters come into this story having given up to some degree. Meeting each other again as adults shocks them and rattles their assumptions and complacency. The meeting they had as teenagers was passionate and life changing.

There is a mystery in this story that does keep you guessing. There are a lot of clues that lead down false trails and make you wonder who our characters should trust.

I LOVE the Coda series so I was pretty damn excited ...
By It's About The Book
I LOVE the Coda series so I was pretty damn excited to see this up on the coming soon list. It’s been soooooo long since I read this series but the author did a great job of reminding me what I loved about these couple’s stories. Shotgun features a new couple, Dom and Lamar. The guys met as teenagers one night while Lamar was in Coda visiting his cousin. Their chemistry is instant and they chance a quick escape to be alone together. Neither has ever messed around with a man before but they give into their urge as many times as they can that night. Lamar returns home to Phoenix in the morning leaving them both to face some hard truths about themselves without the other. Lamar goes home and comes out. Lamar retreats back into the closet heartbroken.

Fast forward 15 years later and Lamar finds himself in Coda again. He took a teaching job to escape his married lover’s grasp over him. Years of being the other man pushed him into action but he’s just as miserable in Coda as he was there. Then his car is vandalized and towed to a body shop. The shop sends someone to pick him up from work and the driver is none other than his first everything, Dom.

Dom has been in love with Lamar since he was 17. Fear of coming out and his family’s homophobia kept him from ever coming out. Then he had a kid with his best friend. Decided marrying her was the right thing to do. They’re now separated and yet Dom is still suppressing his sexuality. And then he sees Lamar. Dom can’t believe the man he’s been fantasizing about for years just walks back into his life. Bringing back all those feelings. Not that he can act on them. He may be older now but he’s carrying much more baggage then his 17 year old self.

Both of the MCs in this book are working through stuff. Lamar has a track record of choosing unavailable men who use him and he is happy to let them in the hopes they’ll one day love him. He’s basically starting his life over in Coda and has somehow gained a stalker. Dom has a teenage daughter to worry about and has been content to pretend to be straight as long as it keeps all the people in his life happy. However Dom is deluding himself. His concern over his family’s reaction is an understandable worry but he’s also afraid to come out. To say he’s gay to someone else. He knows it but others don’t. This made for a somewhat more interesting closet case story line.

I did get pretty frustrated with Dom. He continually hurt Lamar. I can’t say I really loved his character because of this but it did make his conflict seem more real. He seemed selfish and he was but he was such a complete mess he just panicked frequently doing the wrong thing. Of course Lamar’s instinct when Lamar pulled away was to push so I gave some wiggle off the s*** list room to Dom because of it. Not much but a little. Ultimately Dom found the courage to be happy and embrace a happy loving future with Lamar. The man of his dreams. Lamar is finally in love with someone who also loves him. So the journey is a little painful and a little frustrating but worth it. The writing is excellent. I was immersed into their world and understood their struggle. I loved the cameos from Matt, Jared, Zach and Angelo. I was pretty happy with this book. If you’re a fan the Coda series or just looking for a good book with great characters, I’d recommend adding this one to your reading list.
