Four great classic short stories

This is a collection of four early Le Fanu short stories and the first of the manuscripts by Rev. Francis Purcell. The stories cross several genres, all with a dark theme though not necessarily supernatural.

The four included short stories are:

The Ghost and the Bone-Setter (first published January 1838)
The Fortunes of Sir Robert Ardagh (March 1838)
The Last Heir of Castle Connor (June 1838)
The Drunkard's Dream (August 1838)

It would be hard for me to pick a favorite as each of them is so different in style.

Classic Horror-Stories With A Dash of Humor!

This was a pretty good collection of classic short stories. Some horrific, some not so much. It seemed that all of them had a little bit of humor, which I liked. I also like Le Fanu's writing style, which flows easily, despite its age.
A Drunkard's Dream was my favorite story in this volume, because it's interesting to think about what other books or films this tale might have inspired.
Recommended for fans of classic horror short stories.

Hilariously Stupid

Okay, two things I want to say right up front is this little short had me laughing out loud as I read it in bed, much to the chagrin of Hubby who was trying to sleep, and secondly I want to repeat what the author has tried to drill in to the unsuspecting readers head:

THIS BOOK IS NOT FOR CHILDREN!

If you are looking for a book that is `politically correct; give this one a miss. If you are looking for a book that has all its grammatical and spelling ducks in a row; give it a miss. This book is pure unadulterated satire, full of `offensive' comments made by our nerdy `hero', and his faithful side kick. The book is, and I'll say this again, satire; satire is meant to be offensive and so far away from politically correct it would take light years to get there. This little book is also absolutely, hilariously stupid.

The Author uses a pen name, and maybe that's wise after reading this; it would save him having to move multiple times, and keep his insurance premiums down on house and car. Maybe I should consider doing the same after writing this review.

I am going to highly recommend this book to those people out there that are still unafraid to laugh, even if it is in the privacy of your own homes, at the inappropriate jokes, racial slurs and just plain stupidity that passes for common sense nowadays. I truly think you would get a kick out of this book... or is it a `journal', maybe a diary! To find out what I mean by this last sentence, pick it up and give it a read.

Talented author, but proper audience targeting is needed

The last chapter of this very short book is entitled "The Book Just Kind of Ends", and that really sums up the amount of structure contained in the book. There really is no plot.

It doesn't surprise me that readers have been confused as to what age group this is intended for. While I was reading it, I even thought that if the author did adjust the language to a younger age group, he might be quite successful. As it is, we are left with topics that can't possibly appeal to older readers but with language that is not appropriate for younger readers.

The author is clearly talented. There are no typos in this short story. The cover is amazing and the silly illustrations inside are great. I'm actually disappointed that this short story is kind of caught in the middle, because I think the author would score if he would make up his mind what audience he wants to target and then make the appropriate adjustments.

Anyway, I downloaded this for free and am immensely thankful to the author for the opportunity to read his work.

Nerds rule?

This is a weirdly entertaining book that tells and outrageous story of an outcast and his run in with a bully. I enjoyed Derp Sandwich's writing style and the occassional drawings were splendid and delightfully additive rather than being an unnecessary focus. Life is difficult for the different and then as Melvin points out we are all different.

This is a humor book that has its dark side; it is a satire that is close to the truth for some people.

So, do nerds rule? No, probably not at school, but the big wide world is full of a lot of very well paid and powerful nerds. I can see great things happening in Derpy Dirk's future, whether he is involved or not is yet to be determined!

World War III vs. Soviets

I originally read this book in 1979/80, shortly after it was first published. At the time I was a new Infantry lieutenant, newly assigned in Germany. Imagine my surprise when, on p. 1, THE EXACT UNIT between my deployed unit and the Soviets gets overrun by the initial Soviet & East German assault... After that, I took my job more seriously...

If you like well-written military fiction, this is a book you'll enjoy. If you like playing the "what if" game with theoretical planning on either side, you'll like this book. Little did we know when my fellow lieutenants and I read this book that within the decade the Berlin Wall would be down, Germany would be unified, and the Soviet Union would be disintegrating before our very eyes. But, I assure you, in 1980 the Soviets were fully capable of what Hackett's book describes.

I highly recommend this book.
