Part of the ongoing Math Start series, which offers math concepts in picture-book format for a variety of levels, this book introduces the multiples of five, as lizards of different colors travel through the pages on unicycles, a hot-air balloon, an airplane, and other modes of transport, while a green snake looks on. Finally, the number 50 is reached, and lizards explode in all directions. Written in short couplets, the simple text describes the ever-increasing number of lizards, but the highlight of the book is the effective design. An intelligent blending of white space and colors make each double-page spread visually stand out. A box on one side of each page helps children keep track of the multiplying lizards, and a closing section offers adults a few more ideas for easy math education. Todd Morning

Another great book in this series

Math Start! What can I say about this series? I have so many of them, because I love the way they draw kids in with the story, and have such great connections to the Math we are working on in the classroom. I would recommend this series of books highly! You can purchase based on the skills you are working on or based on the level of your students. Great resource!!

Fantastic math related book.

My son was given several of the titles in this series for Christmas. He and his 3 year old sister really enjoy all of them. In this one, they are trying to gather all the lizards together. They arrive in 5's. Then the narrator loses count and they start over, only this time they count by 10's. Great stuff. Makes skip counting painless.

Wonderful!

This has quickly become one of my son's favorite books. We like to read it together on the floor while using "counting bears" to count along with the story. It is a really fun way to introduce skip counting and other preschool math concepts. Reading the book while counting out the bears helps my kiddo see and understand exactly how and why 5+5=10. Highly recommend!

This fascinating work portrays the different approaches favored by the East Germans and the Soviets to stop the exodus of refugees to West Germany. In the wake of Stalin's death in 1953, the Soviets refused the East German request to close their border to West Berlin. The Kremlin rulers told the hard-line East German leaders to solve their refugee problem not by closing the border, but by alleviating their domestic and foreign problems. The book describes how, over the next seven years, the East German regime managed to resist Soviet pressures for liberalization and instead pressured the Soviets into allowing them to build the Berlin Wall. Driving the Soviets Up the Wall forces us to view this critical juncture in the Cold War in a different light. Harrison's work makes us rethink the nature of relations between countries of the Soviet bloc even at the height of the Cold War, while also contributing to ongoing debates over the capacity of weaker states to influence their stronger allies.

This is a stunning, path-breaking work. Harrison, it seems, has done the work of three historians at once. The historical issue is rendered with utmost clarity: East German leader Walter Ulbricht, in an effort to protect his own regime, effectively goaded the mercurial Khrushchev into a tougher policy vis-à-vis the West over Berlin. The book's real accomplishment is to recreate the élan of the time. This is an unusual gift which can sometimes strike with academic historians. The reader may rest assured that Harrison has got the gift. Nowadays, the politically-correct view of the Cold War is that it was a figment of America's reactionary imagination. Harrison doesn't bother to, doesn't need to, refute this idea. She merely does what the historian does best. And then, quite suddenly, you are in the midst of the events themselves. It's a trip well worth taking.

Richard J. Gaylord is Professor Emeritus at the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign. He is a Life member of Clare College at the University of Cambridge in Cambridge England. He has conducted research in theoretical polymer physics and on random walks, as well as in computer simulation modeling in the physical, chemical, biological, economic, and social sciences using Mathematica and is the author of numerous books on Mathematica.

Interesting, useful, concise

I have got several ideas from this book. I have never used Mathematica, but one of the most important features of the book, is the fact that is enough clear, and its code can be translated to oher languages veary easy. I recomend this book for every person interested in cellular automata applications and implementations rather that pure theory.

Easy, whimsical picturebook story

Otto can do many things, from playing to being kind to frogs - but he cannot swim; and for an otter, this is a big problem requiring a little help - from a sister. This easy, whimsical picturebook story will appeal to any child tackling swimming skills, and is also a positive story of how a 'can do' and troubleshooting attitude can help, as well as thoughtful siblings and friends. Parents and libraries will find it appealing to young readers.

Completely adorable!

Oh my gosh! This is so cute!!

It's a fairly simple story (an otter that can't swim), and pretty predictable. But that doesn't take away from the sweetness of the story and the absolutely adorable pictures!! It's somewhat like the "Little Engine That Could" idea, that you can do anything so long as you set your mind to it - only the moral in this book focuses on taking things is tiny steps to reach your goal.

Totally worth the read, if for nothing else but the pictures!

Ageless Wisdom for Warriors, Excellent Translation

As a former infantryman in the US Army, this book covers familiar territory for me. It was very interesting to see many of the same tactics still being taught to soldiers after almost seventy years. As a primer, it is not bad, but of course its true appeal comes from a historical perspective.

Though weapons may have advanced over the decades, and the form of the enemy may change, certain traits of a warrior have not. Aggressiveness and tenacity will always be important, as will the need for close-quarters (and perhaps unconventional) weapons. Though today's soldier should be lucky enough to be carrying a pistol as backup, weapons that are always there (and don't need reloading) will always have their place.

Boris Karpa's translation of the original text is excellent, and maintains a distinct tone. One can almost imagine a Russian accent as they read it. I appreciate how much work must have gone into this translation, and find myself hoping that Karpa finds the time to bring us other classic Soviet training manuals.

This was a fun book, and will be of interest to anyone who has ever wondered what it would be like to cross bayonets (or entrenching tools) with the enemy.

I enjoyed this look into Russian military training. It focuses more on aggressive mindset then a reliance on technology. This manual is quite short but it focuses in the essentials of that time. I have always enjoyed history and historical training methods. A good book.

Our Human Timex strikes again!

Talk about takes a licking, but keeps on ticking! As always, Dirk Pitt to the rescue (was there ever a doubt?) At least now we know who Superman's real role model is! I found the book to be impossible to put down - 'course I feel that way about all of Clive Cussler's novels. He has the same ability as Zane Grey to paint a picture with words - he just does it a lot quicker. "Flood Tide" is not the most complicated plot Mr. Cussler has ever created, and I missed having Loren present, but the past was skillfully married with the future, as in all of his books, and the bad guys definitely got what they had coming to them, some more-so than others. The worst thing is, the story ended all to quickly, and now the agonizing wait for the next book to be published begins! [Personal note to Mr. Cussler - PLEASE WRITE FASTER!!!]

Dirk Pitt is one of the nicest, most interesting characters I have encountered in a long time. His pal, Al, is a great sidekick. These stories are at times slightly implausible but I disagree with the readers who feel Clive Cussler doesn't do his research.
Each part of the book, from the typhoon, to the mountain and lakeside retreat, to the island off Hong Kong to the bayous of Louisiana-it's a fast-paced, interesting read. What I like best about Cussler, besides the characters, settings and descriptions is the fact he's not preachy. It's too boring, kind of like commercials, to have heavy-handed pontificating. None here! Just entertainment and escapism at it's best.
