About the Author
Dom Shaw began his media career at 21 by winning the Grierson Award for Best Documentary in 1982 for co-directing the seminal post-punk documentary ‘Rough Cut & Ready Dubbed’. After a few years directing music documentaries for the fledgling Channel 4, he started scriptwriting for television. In a varied career behind the camera, he has written for peak time series on the BBC and ITV networks in the UK. ‘Eric is Awake’ is his first novel.

Orwell Meets the 2000's in a Book that is Sure to Hit it Big

I'll be the first to admit that I'm a Dystopian junkie, and that it all started with a love for Orwell's 1984, and, subsequently, Animal Farm, so when I saw Eric is Awake by Dom Shaw on Goodreads, and saw Orwell's profile and piercing, sardonic gaze from the cover, I had to be part of the read and review for it, and I am so glad I took the chance with this literary Dystopian ficiton.
Firstly, the cover for this book is vibrant and appealing and captured my interest right away. I am happy to say that the content is even more appealing. The layout for the book is so compelling and well researched. The Orwellian journals, the articles with recipes for impoverished and creative foodies, the running narrative, and even the flashes of police reports might have made for a confusing read, if it wasn't so expertly plotted. As it is, I flew through the pages, with rarely a snag, and a growing sense of foreboding, curiosity, mystery and discomfort.
Indeed, Shaw understands how to craft discomfort with humor and human folly so well, that it is no surprise for me to find out that he has been (under a different name) a bestselling co-author. His language is precision, his story is moving, intriguing and hits uncomfortably close to home, even for a U.S. born reader (the author writes about U.K. related events, but ones that readers of many nations will have no trouble relating to).
This book is highly political in tone, but is, at the same time, aware of the limited views of radicals and conservatives, alike. The book plays upon the sometimes ridiculous ways in which revolutions can occur. It is a novel about human mishaps merged with power grabs merged with lust merged with technology. A novel about how these things bring about the best and worst in different people.
As Eric, the protagonist, struggles with his identity, and even his name (how will he be hailed when he doesn't know, for sure, himself), we readers struggle with our identities, the ways in which we create ourselves and spend our times in this modern age. In the space of this book, the human story does not seem so different from the story told generations ago by authors wondering about humanity, technology and politics.
This is a literary novel, yes. It is a smart, thinking person's novel, sure, but it is also wildly entertaining, much like the novels by Orwell himself. You cannot go wrong picking this book up, but be prepared to think, and be open to re-reading it several times, as I surely will be. This book could easily have been taught in one of my college classes, and since I'm a college teacher, it very well may be in the near future.

Eric is awake, but not very well at all

Is this the time to write of past progressive heroes of the twentieth century?.With the two main centrist Uk parties determined to stamp out memories of the working class movements fighting to achieve a fairer society and a more even distribution of resources;and the Daily Mail engaging in ferocious rubbishing of a key academic and father of the Labour leader from that pre Thatcher period,Ralph Miliband?Even Richard Hoggart's son is reduced in the Guardian to claiming that the seminal Uses of Literacy's purpose is to meet the needs of the writers of Coronation Street!!

The answer in relation to this blinding fear of, and demonisation of the truth, as Britain experiences ever widening social educational and economic gaps between the few rich and the majority who are much poorer, is a resounding yes.Dom Shaw has written an intriguing exploration of the concerns and involvements ot the real George Orwell with a character sprung from the homeless at the time of his death who may or may not be Eric Blair but who goes on to experience the depredations of life on the margins as well as the overweaning power of the Surveillance State today.Assange and Snowden had their forebears like Orwell and 1984 paving the ground for their truths about the individual's quality of life,civil rights and freedom of expression today.

But this is not a heavy book .Rather it carefully ruminates as it authentically travels from pub to rubbish tip in Norh London[innit!?].Its observations are amusing, insightful and absorbing to read Like the lives with little direction that it depicts,you dont know where itis going but Dom makes you want to follow to find out.Having worked extensively with many people who are down and out in that part of North London for 35 years I can vouch for the accuracy of the detail of this manifold existence[if only they could scrounge,..life might almost be tolerable]

This is a thoughtful ,clever delightul read . Is Eric awake in 2013? It is a very pertinent, open question.Do grab this book and find out. It oould make an intriguing movie,reflecting on the state of life today, compared with Orwell's powerful projections 70 years ago.

Incisive, theory driven approach

Having just completed this work as part of self-preparation for an entrance exam to a Master's program in IR, I would like to concur with the first reviewer's points (2002 review) and add what I hope is a salient point. For pure theorists, this is an excellent analysis of competing views of IR philosophy. I would caution, however, that this book is not for the faint of heart. Even a more-than-casual student may be put off by the lack of case studies- in a nine-chapter book, it is not until we approach Game Theory in chapter six that more than passing reference is made to application. And, it should be noted, since the book was published in 1991, the case-study in question is the USSR. To be fair, the authors make no pretensions that they are writing a collection of case-studies. Those prepared to invest some brain-power in studying this book will come away with a deep understanding of arguments for and against nearly every theory of IR, within the constraints of publication date. Martin and Hollis's work would benefit from a look at the more recent developments in IR, including the rise of non-state actors over the last two decades, but this is a problem of chronology, not an inherent flaw in their work.

A great teaching tool

This review by a philospher of science and an International Relations theorist of the range of debates in International Relations theory is one of the more useful advanced teaching tools in the discipline. What distinguingshes this book from the usual run-of-the-mill IR theory textbook is the authors' concern to locate IR theory within the broader questions of philosophy of the sciences. The conclusions will certainly not please those who believe in positivism, and provides one of the most convincing critiques of positivist approaches in IR. This is a book for those who take theory serious, and are prepared to put some thought into their reading, and who believe that epistemology and ontology are important.
I have used this book in a postgraduate IR theory course virtually since it was published, and year after year my students find it the most useful and interesting piece of reading in the course

An imperfect enterprise

This book is a good road map to Danish...it does an excellent job of explaining grammar and sentence structure.
What makes it frustrating for a beginner like me, however, is the way it approaches vocabulary. I've learned several other languages, and I like to learn new nouns in groups ("animals" "professions" "rooms of the house")
This book throws huge groups of unrelated words at you as it goes about explaining sentence structure, and I found them almost impossible to keep straight.
I ended up keeping a separate notebook to organize them myself!
Another important point: Pronunciation is the most difficult part of Danish, so I'd recommend buying this book WITH the cassettes. I bought the book alone, and now to get the cassettes - which are really necessary - I'm going to have to buy another copy of the book!

Best Introductory teach-yourself-Danish course on the market

I have tried just about all of the beginning Danish language courses on the market and this one is my favorite. It moves quickly and covers a lot of material, so I'm glad I tried some of the other courses first, to give me a basic introduction. This program does a good job of teaching conversational Danish while introducing the essential grammar rules a little at a time. The authors have a good sense for what is essential and what can wait. It teaches many colloquial expressions and rules of Danish sentence construction, so I am now able to create my own expressions and not just parrot back the ones I have memorized. The book has a few misspellings, as other reviewers have mentioned, such as "hi" in chapter one--it should be spelled "hej"--but I catch the occasional errors because I also work with a dictionary. (There are very few). The four cassette tapes are an absolute must. We English speakers will never get Danish pronunciation right unless we hear it spoken by a native. You will find that native speakers in Denmark slur their final t's more than the speakers on the tape (Danes make a a sound on some d's and t's that only Danes can make--it is NOT "TH," as all the books claim). But the extra careful pronunciation on the tape is useful for learning the language. This is the only tape that enunciates carefully enough so that I can tell the difference between words like "dansker" and "danskere." Another reviewer complained that the word lists are not grouped by topical subject type. That reviewer missed the fact that the words are grouped according to which spelling and conjugation patterns they follow. That is very useful for memorizing all those confounded endings on Danish nouns and adjectives. This program makes me hopeful that learning a foreign language is possible and easy with a little daily effort on my part. It is fun! I'm driving my family nuts, talking in Danish around the house. The other excellent beginning course that I am using is from Rosetta Stone--but it is a lot more money.

excellent, but not flawless

This book is an excellent introduction to learning the Danish language. However, several misspellings are present within the text. As this can be a problem, I would recommend to EVERYONE to get the accompanying cassettes which compliment the course. This would also act as a good precautionary due to the fact that at the beginning, Danish is often very difficult to understand until your ear has been finely tuned to the sounds of the language. Aside from the mistakes, the text gives a simple and easily understandable approach to grammar and also to the vocabulary. The course uses such things as humor and fairy tales to teach the language, along with several model sentences and short dialogues to hear the language spoken at a normal rate of speech. Having the cassettes comes in handy the most with these dialogues. All in all, this is an excellent intro to the language, and one can deal fairly well with Danish after completing the course, as it expresses both formal and informal usage of the language.

Justinian and Theodora- a good source

Justinian and Theodora is a good book with lots of information. I personally think it should have more about Justinian's early life. It's also just a tad bit confusing at times. Other than that, though, it's a great source for information on not only Justinian and Theodora, but also other well-known and not-so-well-known characters of ancient Rome such as Anastasius, Belisarius, and many others. You would do well to read this narrative if you need information on Justinian and/or Theodora, or are just interested in ancient Rome.

Not much about Justinian or Throdora

I found out very little about the people themselves. The book sticks to the known timeline and actions as reported mainly by writers who didn't like them. It is a little like trying to understand President Obama by describing the history of the Affordable Health Act!

a solid history of the original "power couple"

_Justinian and Theodora_ is a bit dated (it was first published in 1987), but there is much to recommend about it. There are a number of photographs (over 100, several in color), and the historical context of Justinian's reign is both easy to understand and detailed. Where there are historical controversies (as with Procopius), Browning is intellecutally honest enough to state them, but also enough of an academic to evaluate them and explain his reasoning on the veracity of the statements.

I was particularly impressed with Browning's disucssion around the controversies within the Byzantine Empire of Justinian - religious as well as socio-economic, and the larger political pressures Justinian was facing as the Roman empire in the west was disintegrating. Theodora's role as the "power behind the throne" made for riveting reading as well - for me, she is among the most interesting women in history. I had hoped, however, that more depth had been given to the conflict in the east with the Sassanids; much more attention is given to Belisarius' conquests in north Africa and Italy which is common to histories of this period. I had also hoped that more light was shed on Theodora's role (if any) in Justinian's quest to reconquor these parts of the empire.

For those with a passing familiarity with the period, there is an abundance of information that is both fascinating and new here. The novice will similarly be impressed. A recommended read.

Hitchens's one-liners bear the marks of considerable sparring practice with believers. Yet few believers will recognize themselves as Hitchens associates all of them for all time with the worst of history's theocratic and inquisitional moments. All the same, this is salutary reading as a means of culling believers' weaker arguments: that faith offers comfort (false comfort is none at all), or has provided a historical hedge against fascism (it mostly hasn't), or that "Eastern" religions are better (nope). The book's real strength is Hitchens's on-the-ground glimpses of religion's worst face in various war zones and isolated despotic regimes. But its weakness is its almost fanatical insistence that religion poisons "everything," which tips over into barely disguised misanthropy. (May 30)

Not only does religion poison everything, which he argues by explaining several ways in which religion is immoral, but the world would be better off without religion. Replace religious faith with inquiry, open-mindedness, and the pursuit of ideas, he exhorts. Closely reading major religious texts, Hitchens points to numerous examples of atrocities and mayhem in them. Religious faith, he asserts, is both result and cause of dangerous sexual repression. What's more, it is grounded in nothing more than wish fulfillment. Hence, he believes that religion is man-made, and an ethical life can be lived without its stamp of approval. With such chapter titles as "Religion Kills" and "Is Religion Child Abuse?" Hitchens intends to provoke, but he is not mean-spirited and humorless. Indeed, he is effortlessly witty and entertaining as well as utterly rational. Believers will be disturbed and may even charge him with blasphemy (he questions not only the virgin birth but the very existence of Jesus), and he may not change many minds, but he offers the open-minded plenty to think about. God Is Not Great is a superbly efficacious antidote to religious thinking and a quick reference for sound reasoning and great philosophers of antiquity.

Hitchens' book changed my life in profound and wonderful ways. By encouraging the use and strengthening of one's own faculties, it can truly awaken the slumbering intellect of the faithful and lead the reader down an exhilarating rabbit hole of human knowledge and fearless inquiry.

It's a great contemporary work to whet a new reader's appetite for greats such as Spinoza, Russell, Hume, Lucretius and the like.

I've purchased this book as a gift multiple times and it never fails to positively motivate my friends and family to think for themselves.

In a post-nuclear world, where a reality tv gameshow host holds the highest office in the land, we need more Hitchens. His works live on! Buy and share! Share the truly good news that god is not great and we are the architects of our own fate!

It is a shocking book-- like learning that your pappa was Santa Claus

As important to human consciousness as Copernicus-- and far more critical to furthering world peace than Moses, Jesus, or Muhammad. I have dared the "faith-full" to read it through. They skim, they reguse, abd they distort and misremember. It is a shocking book-- like learning that your pappa was Santa Claus, but a thousand tomesmore difficult to accept. Truly a watershed in our evolution of thoughtfulness and an accurate awareness of the Mystery and the Truth!!!

But this book is.

Let me first say, because it's important here and it points at why I value this book, that I come from Poland's Catholicism. This is one of the books I picked up to confirm my long-standing disagreement with religion. I like the informal (yet eloquent) style, clarity of thought, and orderly composition. I found here quite a few related topics and they all validate my observations and experiences. After purchasing and reading ebook I also bought a paperback to have this new friend in my real life library and to be able to lend the book if needed. Now I savor The Portable Atheist which I bought for Kindle and in paper as well, for the same reason. There are not that many books on atheism or anticlericalism in my country, and if they get published at all – they are usually limited to the local perspective, and they also tend to be quite polite and cautious, for political reasons. But at this point in my life I felt it was time for a blast of fury. For something big, boldly reasoned. I'm glad I found this brilliant mind.
