A good chronological look at an enduring comic icon
By Corum Seth Smith
Like "The Greatest Batman Stories Ever Told," the "Greatest Joker Stories Ever Told" chronicle the history of one of comic book history's most enduring characters. In this case, however, it is a villain who is portrayed.
The Joker has changed radically from age to age, much like the Batman. In the thirties and early 40's, the Joker is a diabolical thief and killer; often outsmarting everyone in Gotham.
In the 50's and 60's, however, the Joker refrains from killing people, and makes his primary task in crime to humiliate Batman and Robin. In some ways this compromises the almost satanic degree of evil that the Joker is capable of in his more contemporary incarnations. In other ways, it makes for a more engaging storyline as the primary focus is on a battle of wits and not of wills.
And of course the story of the "Laughing Fish" is just a classic criminal plot. The Joker in the seventies became a compilation of attributes (mastermind, killer, eloquent rival) of his character from the different preceding eras, and is probably my favorite Joker of all.
The book exceeded my expectations, which were good ones!

The Clown Prince of Crime
By Kevin Killian
Here the Joker in the Batman comics gets his own book, which would suit his enormous vanity down to a T. Fans are divided as to whether the "Dark Knight" noir side of the Batman is the only acceptable face to the comic, and in general the lighthearted camp approach of the 1960s TV show is mocked and derided today. Everyone's looking for angst, particularly in their cartoon super-heroes. And so the Joker, with his chalk-white face and his manic grin, is no longer in, though even the zaniest of the late 1950s strips portrayed him as a man mentally torn between madness and street smarts. Fans of the dark approach like the way in which, by the 1970s, the Joker was actually killing people, often in horrible ways, in place of the surprise "laughing gas" tricks and comic crimes he resorted to back in the day. Both tribes of fans will find plenty to like in this book.

It's interesting to note how literate they must have assumed their audience to be back in the 40s and 50s. One story has the Joker adopting disguises--the costumes of famous characters of comedy--to commit his crimes in. I'm not talking Lucy and Ricky here, but Mr. Micawber from David Copperfield, Pagliacci, Pickwick, and Falstaff (who invades a performance of HAMLET and makes a spectacle of himself with his lines from Henry V.) Try that one out on today's comic readers!

The most negligible story here is "Crime-of-the-Month Club" from 1957, in which The Joker tries to sell thugs his own "brilliantly conceived" caper plans for crimes, each one for some reason obviously tied in with particular months (April fools, June brides), in an auction pyramid scheme with some foreshadowing of the EBay of the present day. It's fluff, and it's not even good fluff. On the other end of the spectrum is the epic, Sergio Leone inspired "The Joker's Five-Way Revenge" from 1973, in which the Joker dispatches, one by one, five of his goons with terrifying power and real dementia, while the Batman runs always a step or two behind. It's grim, and some like them grim. I myself prefer the stories which pair the Joker with the blonde sex bomb "Sparrow," and the spooky transformations of "Clay-Face" from earlier on in the Joker's long career. One story that didn't make it into the book, though the editors were tempted, is the one that paired Batman and the Joker with none other than Jerry Lewis. Seems to me he would have been a great movie Joker, probably better than Jack Nicholson. Nicholson has his famous "killer smile," but Jerry had the real killer mind....

Mike Gold and Mark Wald supply notes that are pretty informative and the comics look good (except for their color registers). I dock the book a notch only because it's actually too much of a good thing, for after a while you get tired of the Joker, and maybe 18 or 19 stories in a row was pushing it.

Has some great moments, but overall disappointing
By Dean Kilbride
This book looked great. Great cover, great concept - the Joker's best stories since his inception in 1940. Sadly, the kind yet insane people at DC Comics chose the strangest selection ever considering this was supposed to be the greatest stories EVER told. Included at the back of the book is a section by Mark Waid, who describes other Joker stories which didn't make the cut. Most of them actually sound better than the ones included, such as "The Last Laugh", in which the Joker erects a giant monument - of himself, naturally - in Gotham Harbour, and an issue in which he forces Batman into a boxing match with spiked gloves on. Sounds interesting, right?

Sadly, some genius decided that including numerous, interchangable, and mind-numbing stories from the 50s and 60s was more important in terms of page allocation. Each story is indistinguishable from the next, and none are especially interesting.

Two early highlights are from the early 1940s, when Bob Kane was still drawing Batman. These stories take place in a Gotham that consists of spooky haunted houses, with the Joker lunging out of the shadows to spook the bejesus out of you. Clowns are scary that way. One weird moment, however, is in "The Case of the Joker's Crime Circus", in which the writers make a point about introducing a midget called "Tino" to the reader, as if setting up a major plot point for later on. After Tino's eloquent introduction courtesy the Joker ("THIS IS TINO!"), he vanishes completely. Way to go, guys.

Things pick up, after 165 pages, with 1973's "The Joker's Five-Way Revenge". Regarded as one of the single best stand-alone Batman issues, it features a Denny O'Neil story and inventive Neal Adams art. The Joker sets about murdering his ex-gang members, coincidentally in the exact order Batman chooses to track them down in. The Joker is taking babysteps back to being threatening after the creative hell that was the 50s and 60s, and Batman is as heroic and compassionate as ever. The shark tank sequence is frankly awesome, but the ending is strange... after Batman catches the Joker, he leads him off by the scruff of his neck, and the Joker calmly complies. The Joker is supposed to be a homicidal, intelligent dynamo of evil, not a five-year-old kid. Still, this is cool.

The absolute high point is the double-whammy of "The Laughing Fish"/"The Sign of the Joker", by Steve Englehart. Despite some baffling-to-novices subplots, the result of its being from the middle of Englehart's run on Detective Comics, this is bloody beautiful. The Joker here is a murderer, a bully, creative, intelligent and, best of all, actually funny. Batman, also in top form, is run through the wringer to stop him. The art by Marshall Rogers is truly top-drawer stuff, but it's recommended you buy instead "Strange Apparitions", which collects Englehart's complete run.

There are only 3 other post-1970 stories, which range from fair to appalling. In "Dreadful Birthday, Dear Joker", an otherwise acceptable story from 1980, the colouring is garish and disgusting. Which brings me to my next gripe: the original colours of these stories has been jettisioned for no discernible reason, and is instead coloured by contemporary (as of 1989) colourists. This is unnoticeable in most cases, but it's disappointing that the original colours weren't retained, in order to keep the stories as they were. The colours for the aforementioned story, though, are simply unforgivable. The Joker's suit at one stage appears to be bright blue. Nice one, Julianna Ferriter, whoever you are. May you never work in comics again.

This suffers badly from a baffling, terrible selection of stories, with really on three "great" ones in the whole bunch, two of which are really part of the same story. There were many, many other interesting selections which could have been made. The 1980s is sorely underrepresented, especially considering this collection was produced in 1989, and the most recent story contained within is from 1980. A three-part story from 1983 in which the Joker attempts to take over Guatemala, as detailed in the notes section, is a damn sight more interesting and worthy of inclusion than the umpteenth 50s story involving the Joker dressing up as Old King Cole or whatever the hell else he did back then. Sadly, their excuse is that they "didn't have enough space". Yes, you did, DC Comics. You just squandered it badly.

That said... it's OK. The best stories drag the rating up a star or two. The rest are either cute or intolerable. How intolerable? In "The Great Clayface-Joker Feud", Clayface escapes our heroes by morphing into a mystical flying sphinx. Loser.

Curing the Incurable: Vitamin C, Infectious Diseases, and Toxins, 3rd Edition, by MD JD Thomas E Levy

Several years ago the author, cardiologist Thomas E. Levy, MD, JD was asked to assist Hal Huggins, DDS, with a number of Dr.  Huggins' dental patients. Each of the patients was quite ill and obviously suffering with one or more very serious medical conditions. Prior to sedating each patient Dr. Huggins asked Dr. Levy to administer a specific protocol of vitamin C.

Dr. Levy had never performed or even heard of such a practice, but was greatly impressed as each patient left the dental office markedly improved — many were asymptomatic. As a result, his interest in vitamin  C was greatly aroused and he began a search through all the medical literature for any studies concerning this vitamin therapy and the miraculous results he had witnessed time and time again.

He quickly found the medical journals were filled with thousands of studies and articles about vitamin  C. Many of them reported similarly dramatic results with a myriad of diseases and other difficult medical conditions. Dr. Levy knew that this was information that all his colleagues needed. Consequently, he was compelled to spend the next four years researching and writing Curing the Incurable. Because this book was written especially for his medical colleagues, Dr.  Levy has taken great care to research, document, and report the vital truths about vitamin C — he cites over 1,200 scientific references.

Curing the Incurable provides the information you need to most effectively use vitamin C to:

  • Prevent, cure, reverse and/or greatly improve a massive list of health conditions.
  • Cut your mortality risk (from all causes) by as much as 50%.
  • Boost your immune system and energy levels to optimum levels.
  • Optimize blood and intracellular levels of vitamin C.
  • Dramatically increase bio-availability (up to 800% or more) without increasing your dose size.
  • Avoid gastric discomfort, the diarrhea, and increased urination that prove most of your large doses of vitamin C are headed for the sewer.
  • And much, much more.

skeptic turned believer
By Bryan
Dr. Levy did an amazing job of distilling many decades of research on vitamin C. In spite of the compelling research, I found myself being skeptical about the power of vitamin C--that is, until I put myself on a 6-week (and running) regimen of 10,000 mg daily of vitamin C complex--without any ill side effects. The outcomes have been astounding: 1) My prostate health has been restored. 2) My chronic skin condition (acne/folliculitis) has improved by 75% in six weeks--after 30 years of taking an array of antibiotics and other conventional drugs such as Accutane, and of using various topical solutions. 3) My irritable bowel syndrome--probably the result of years of taking antibiotics--has not bothered me in one month. 4) My anxiety level has fallen sharply. Dr. Levy's book and his lectures on YouTube provide a wealth of information. If you or someone you care about suffers from a chronic or acute disease, and if conventional medicine has failed (or if you prefer alternative medicine in the first place!), you owe it to yourself to read and study this book carefully, and do further research on vitamin C, particularly liposome-encapsulated vitamin C. I hope that you experience profound results like I have! Thank you Dr. Levy!

The Little-Known Secrets of Vitamin C
By Bryce H.
"Curing the Incurable" is one of the most heavily referenced books on health, mostly references of medical journal papers.

Dr. Levy tells the story of two boys playing hide and go seek in a cornfield, who were sprayed with a powerful pesticide, parathion.
One boy was taken to the local ER and passed away. The other was taken to a practitioner of Vitamin C therapy and was injected intravenously with 100,000mg of Vitamin C, and went home for supper.

This book documents the uses of large-dose Vitamin C therapy upon disease and poisoning. I personally take a big dose of the pills when I just don't feel right.

A great book by a courageous doctor.
By J. SEHGAL
I have used vitamin C and other vitamins, minerals and amino acids quite extensively and I have good reasons believe that my arterial blockages were controlled because of it. I have considered myself as a very well informed micro-nutrient nut. I have always felt so very discouraged by the constant barrage of anti-micro-nutrient propaganda for so many years. But this book is an astonishing slap in the face of those who deny the veracity of vitamin C. It was heartening to learn that 20,000 articles had been published on this substance till 2002 and almost 350 papers are published annually! Dr. Levy lists many infectious diseases and cancers that have been cured by it. He goes on to note what doses are required and what considerations go into adjusting them for individual cases. He also lists, in many cases, the success rates achieved by physicians. This is astonishing. Even more astonishing is the fact that not only is this substance not used in medical therapy, the profession is downright hostile to it. I have experienced that first hand through the condescending smiles of my own family physician.

After reading this book, the vitamin-nutrient detractors' lies lay exposed in front of me and that was very heartening. I can now hold my head high and with full confidence tell my contrarian physician that he is wrong. I recommend this book highly for all those who want to take responsibility for their own health and not succumb to the scare mongering of the vendors of poisonous concoctions.

My only reservation is that the book does not address the issue of congestive heart disease so eminently attacked by Drs. Mathis Rath and Linus Pauling. While this is only one disease left out among the many that are addressed, it is a huge epidemic and should have been dealt with quite extensively. This is the reason for my 4 star rating. But for that this book gets 5 stars from me.

The world is virtual, but the danger is real in the next series from MAZE RUNNER author James Dashner.

The VirtNet offers total mind and body immersion, and the more hacking skills you have, the more fun it is. Why bother following the rules when it’s so easy to break them? But some rules were made for a reason. Some technology is too dangerous to fool with. And one gamer has been doing exactly that, with murderous results.
The government knows that to catch a hacker, you need a hacker. And they’ve been watching Michael. If he accepts their challenge, Michael will need to go off the VirtNet grid, to the back alleys and corners of the system human eyes have never seen—and it’s possible that the line between game and reality will be blurred forever.
The author who brought you the #1 New York Times bestselling MAZE RUNNER series and two #1 movies—The Maze Runner and The Scorch Trials—now brings you The Eye of Minds, the first book in THE MORTALITY DOCTRINE series, an edge-of-your-seat adventure that takes you into a world of hyperadvanced technology, cyber terrorists, and gaming beyond your wildest dreams . . . and your worst nightmares.

“Dashner takes full advantage of the Matrix-esque potential for asking ‘what is real.’” —io9.com

“Set in a world taken over by virtual reality gaming, the series perfectly capture[s] Dashner’s hallmarks for inventiveness, teen dialogue and an ability to add twists and turns like no other author.” —MTV.com

“A brilliant, visceral, gamified mash-up of The Matrix and Inception, guaranteed to thrill even the non-gaming crowd.” —Christian Science Monitor

Amazon.com Review
Q&A with James Dashner (Interviewed by Brandon Sanderson)

Q. The Eye of Minds is quite the edge-of-your-seat cyber adventure. How did you come up with the idea to write such a different type of book compared to the Maze Runner series?

A. Well, my good sir, first of all, thanks you for saying that. When I started brainstorming what I wanted to do next, I didn’t really think much about The Maze Runner books, or try too specifically to be different. I just wanted an engaging story, something that I’d love to write for several books. Two of my favorite movies ended up serving as an inspiration: The Matrix and Inception. Readers will see a lot of influence from those stories. In fact, I kept thinking a certain something would happen in The Matrix, and it surprised me when it never did. It happens in my book!

Q. Recently, privacy, online security, and online warfare have been featured prominently in the headlines. Did that influence your fiction at all? If not, do you think it’s a coincidence that those issues are cropping up right when you were inspired to write this particular book?

A. I think everything in the news influences me without my realizing it. It chills me to the bone when I think of what hackers can do to the stability of so many things that we take for granted. I’m also fascinated by the realm of virtual reality, and what happens when you can no longer tell the difference between what is real and what is not. But, mainly, really I just set out to write a great story.

Q. There’s a lot of great buzz surrounding next year’s release of the film version of The Maze Runner. As the author, you must have the world completely imagined in your head. How close do you think the movie will be to that vision? What are you most looking forward to seeing on the big screen? How do you feel your readers will respond to the transformation from page to movie screen?

A. Of all the things in my career so far, I have to admit this is the one I’m most excited about. I’ve been a movie buff all my life, and to see something I wrote being turned into one . . . It’s just surreal and hard to believe. It was scary at first to place something so close to you in the hands of someone else, but luckily for me, I’m in very, very good hands. I’ve been blown away by how much Director Wes Ball and the producers have captured the vision of the book. Also, at how true they’re being to the spirit and tone and story. I think my readers are going to love it. Personally, the scene I’m most excited to see is the one where Thomas gets stuck in the maze for the first time, with Alby and Minho.

Q. Tell us about The Eye of Minds!

A. It’s in the future, but I really don’t want people to think of this as dystopian. It’s not. The world is basically in fine shape. But virtual reality technology has gone through the roof and most people are obsessed with it. Like I said earlier, the line between what’s real and what’s not gets blurred, which sets the stage for some fun twists and mind-bendy stuff. I think my fans will have a good time with it.

From School Library Journal
Gr 7 Up—Like many other gamers, Michael enjoys escaping into the VirtNet, the virtual world where he can play, hang with friends he's never met in real life, and test his hacking skills in battles against virtual enemies. Michael is an expert gamer, one who can hack the code and break the rules, building a reputation for being a tough player on a team with his friends Bryson and Sarah. When gamers begin disappearing, and others return from the VirtNet brain-dead, Michael and his friends are chosen by VirtNet Security to find the suspected perpetrator of these crimes, a cyberterrorist named Kaine. Erik Davies performs the story admirably, voicing each character, from the evil Kaine to the sweet Sarah, with equally appropriate voices, and his expressive interpretation keeps the suspense high. There is a lot of action, some graphically bloody battles, horrible monsters, impossible challenges and some seemingly unattainable feats that are managed handily by the teen trio. Fans of advanced technology and virtual gaming will appreciate this first volume (Delacorte, 2013) in "The Mortality Doctrine" series by the author of The Maze Runner and eagerly await the next installment.—MaryAnn Karre, West Middle School, Binghamton, NY

From Booklist
In Dashner’s futuristic series starter, virtual life offers Michael opportunities to escape the real world. He spends most of his time on the Virtnet, playing Lifeblood Deep with his virtual friends Bryson and Sarah. Now, haunted by his daytime experiences, he needs them more than ever. What Michael fears most comes true: Virtual Network Security tracks him down, but not to chastise him for wrongdoing; rather, they want his hacking skills to get to Kaine, a gamer who is causing terrible tragedies. Michael and his friends begin the trek into the hand-to-hand combat warfare game Devils of Destruction, but with the virtual death of his friends, Michael finds himself alone in his quest. Harrowing evil and dastardly demons place themselves in his path, and he almost capitulates to the pain and exhaustion. What awaits him in the bowels of the game hangs over readers’ heads with each page turn, raising a constant question: Who is human and who is not? In typical Dashner style, this is quick and involving, with the main frustration being the wait time until the next book. HIGH-DEMAND BACKSTORY: Dashner’s Maze Runner trilogy was huuuuge. With a video game, author tour, and major outdoor advertising, this could be even huger. Grades 7-10. --J. B. Petty

Not Flaw-Free, but a Fun, Suspenseful Start to a New Trilogy
By weathered1
When I read THE MAZE RUNNER, I was pulled in from the very first page, and couldn't put the book down. So, I eagerly picked up THE EYE OF MINDS, hoping for - and expecting - the same result. Did that happen? Not so much.

I'll start by saying that, even with the above in mind, this is not a bad book, and in all fairness, I had let my expectations rise a bit too high. As other reviews have mentioned, it does have some shades of READY PLAYER ONE (an excellent book), in terms of the gamer culture, references to the various games being played, the point of playing them, and all the wonders of the virtual reality in which all if it takes place. Just as is the case with the aforementioned book, one does not have to be a gamer to understand and/or enjoy the plot, the characters, or the book, as a whole. The amount of exposition given is enough to explain all of those things and give readers an understanding of the world-building, while not straying too heavily into boring recitations of information that would make one's eyes glaze over and seek to skip any number of pages devoted to nothing but rote explanations.

All of that was fine. My problems with the book started with the pacing. Initially, even though the story doesn't get bogged down in unnecessary details, it does take awhile for the action to really get going, so my interest was not captured right off the bat with this one. That may sound odd, given what transpires when the book begins, but after that first situation is resolved after a handful of pages, nothing much happens until Michael is given his mission (which is mentioned in the book's summary). After that comes the preparation for the mission, and it is only after Michael and his friends begin that particular journey that things really take off. From that point on, the suspense grabs you and doesn't let go until you turn the final page - it just takes a little while to get there. (Pacing is also something of an issue at the end, though, as the climactic event(s) for which readers have been waiting since the first page just sort of happen and then they're done. For now. It seems like a lot of build-up for not too much pay-off. I suspect that that's largely because this is just the first installment in the trilogy, though, so it's not a huge problem.)

Then, there is some of the dialogue. Though this tapers off as the book progresses, when everything begins, a fair amount of what is said is just so stilted and unnaturally phrased that it doesn't resemble actual conversations, and serves to take the reader out of the story a bit. Things do get better in that regard, but when the conversations begin in earnest between Michael and his friends, another issue - albeit a small one - rears its head. Yes, they are teenagers, and yes, they are prone to sarcasm. However, when they start to take the time to get snarky and quippy when time is of the essence and their lives are in danger, well, it got a little irritating.

In terms of Michael and his friends, Bryson and Sarah, they are not only typical teenagers, they are typical teenagers in a young adult novel. By that, I mean that each fills a relatively stereotypical role, and that's about it. Bryson is the fun and funny best guy-friend who comes through when he's needed, and Sarah is the smart, responsible girl who keeps the boys in line, and whose existence is necessary for the requisite hint of romance. Michael, the main character, is exactly what you would expect him to be: a very good gamer/hacker, alternately scared and incredibly brave, who is tasked with a giant responsibility. And is always hungry. It is easy to root for all of the characters, even though there is not a huge amount of character development - the roles they play/fill at the beginning are basically the same ones they play/fill at the end, with one notable exception. The government agents are clichés who play small roles, and the people/gamers he meets along the way are basically more of the same. As for the villain of the piece, well, he's somewhat cartoony; an evil genius, sure, but cartoony. Again, I expect that we'll learn more about him in subsequent installments.
As for the twist that other reviewers have mentioned: it is a good twist, I'll give it that. It's not a totally unpredictable one, because clues are given throughout the story, but it does set things up nicely for the sequel(s).

The bottom line, for me, is that this one isn't as good as James Dashner's first book, and it does have some flaws, but once it really gets going, it's imaginative and suspenseful, and it really does make you wish that it was Fall 2014 so that you could pick up the next book.

Great start to an exciting new series!
By Evie Seo
The Eye of Minds is an action-packed and edgy cyber adventure with plot that revolves around the concept of virtual reality, otherwise known as VirtNet. Sporting an intriguing, futuristic premise and highly imaginative vision, this book is a treat for all fans of science fiction thrillers. Suspenseful and twisty, The Eye of Minds blurs the line between what's real and what's not, making the reader question everything that transpires within the pages. It's a great mind-bender written in signature Dashner style - gripping, intense and stimulating.

Michael, the lead character, is a gamer addicted to Lifeblood Deep. Lifeblood is a game mimicking real life - realistic and gritty. And it's the most popular game in VirtNet. And what is VirtNet, you may ask? Why, VirtNet is a cool concept in itself! It's a vast cyber world, with games and hangouts for gamers of all ages. In VirtNet, you can experience just about anything you wish to - from physical pleasure to pain - and it's a whole body, full-stimulation experience. You can eat, but you'll never get fat in the real world because the Coffin (which is what most people call the NerveBox that allows them to connect to virtual reality) feeds you pure, healthy nutrients, even if you think you're eating some high calorie junk food. You can cut your hair, take a shower, even pee if you want to, and the Coffin will provide your brain and body with stimulants that will make the experience feel real. It's all extremely cool and entertaining, until someone decides to turn it into a nightmare. A cyber-terrorist named Kaine is somehow trapping people inside the Sleep, not letting them wake up. And not being able to get back to their real lives, some of them end up killing themselves. And not just in the virtual reality, but in the Wake, too.

While playing Lifeblood Deep, Micheal witnesses a girl dig into her own skull and pull her Core out and then jump off the bridge (the Core being a piece of code preventing you from getting hurt/killed in the real world, even if something happens to your virtual self). He then gets kidnapped by masked men who, as he later finds out, work for VNS (VirtNet Security). Turns out, the government need his experience and hacking skills to find Kaine. His friends from the virtual world, Bryson and Sarah, agree to join him on his new quest to find the cyber terrorist (a quest that he is practically forced into), despite it being extremely dangerous and potentially deadly. To find Kaine, they'll have to go through a lot, including finding the path to the Hallowed Ravine first, and by the time they reach their destination, they'll be regretting ever getting involved in this case at all.

This book will appeal to fans of science fiction interested in virtual reality, gaming and innovative technologies. Especially to teenage boys. The action packed plot is full of surprises and changes in scenery, making this a hold-on-tight-to-your-pants kind of read. The virtual world of VirtNet is well developed and described in a way that makes you wonder what it would be like to visit there one day and experience it all for yourself, but it also has a darker, more sinister side to it. And that's what makes this book so thrilling.

The character development is on a decent level, though I personally didn't feel any deeper connection with any of the lead characters, perhaps because they seemed so young and different from the kids I grew up around. And, of course, it's totally understandable, considering the futuristic setting of this book and how incredibly technologically advanced their world is. That being said, I think teenage readers would not have any problem relating to the characters at all. I guess I'm just a bit too old for that ;)

Overall, this book reminded me a lot of the movie The Matrix, and it's really no wonder, since Dashner himself admits it was one of his inspirations. The mystery behind Kaine's persona plays a big part in this book; discovering his motives is what keeps you turning the pages. And they're plenty of surprises along the way. Ultimately, The Eye of Minds is a promising beginning to a new, exciting series. It's not a perfect story, it has its shortcomings, but they're small enough to be easily overlooked, and Dashner's highly captivating writing style makes up for all of them.

There's an interesting plot there, but you have to dig for it
By Bookphile
This was not a book I took to immediately. For a good chunk of the first section of the book, I was not immersed in the story for a variety of reasons. As interesting as the concept was, I didn't think it was executed all that well for a good stretch. Some spoilers to follow.

The writing for a good portion of the beginning part of the book is not very good. The dialogue often felt stilted and unnatural. I also thought some sections were not just superfluous, but boring. There's too much mundane activity going on, things that don't have any real reason to be in the text.

Hand in hand with this, I didn't find the characters particularly compelling, and some of them just felt silly. The descriptions of them are laden with heavy details that serve as flags to let the reader know at an instant what sort of character they're dealing with. Agent Weber in particular struck me as ridiculous, and the description of her is so heavy with cliche that it almost dripped right off her.

After a while, though, both Michael and Sarah began to grow on me, and their strongest moments took place when I saw what they were doing instead of listening to them talk or explain themselves. I still take some issue with Michael, though, as there is heavy implication of how special he is, yet at no point did I feel like there was anything overly extraordinary about him. If he's so special, show me him being special, don't keep insisting that he is without providing any evidence to back the claim up.

Setting was also disappointingly weak for a good chunk of this novel. I loved The Maze Runner because the setting was so well imagined. This book seems like an even better setup for a fantastic setting, but it's not until Michael and his friends start their active pursuit of Kaine that things get interesting. I'm an avid gamer and was looking for a book that reminded me of all the reasons why that augmented reality is so appealing, but I very much failed to understand the appeal of Lifeblood. Fortunately, things took a turn for the better when the book provided a pretty fascinating and disturbing glimpse into the human mind when the teens sneak into a war game that turns out to be even more sinister than its setup implies. I also enjoyed the twisted nature of the Path, which gets weirder and seemingly more random the deeper Michael goes.

Pacing also improves at this point. There's are so many things of a mundane nature going on at the beginning of the book that reading through them was a slog. Once Michael was really on Kaine's trail, though, things got considerably more lively. Really, this is where I think Dashner fares the best. His action scenes zip right along with just enough detail--I could picture what was happening but didn't feel like I was reading a manual.

The big reveal wasn't a total shock for me, but I did like the ending. There was something sort of sinister about it, and by that point the book had sucked me in enough that I'd be interested in reading the second installment. Yet that makes me wonder about this book, and about YA lit in general. Everything has become a series, which doesn't necessarily translate into a bigger and better plot. Instead, books like this one seem like an overly elaborate setup for the actual plot, which is likely why I wasn't engaged until I was around halfway through the book. The old adage that "less is more" holds a lot more truth than publishers seem to realize, and this series in particular would have benefited from trimming much of the fat and preserving the meat.

Against Doctor's Orders, by Radclyffe

There’d been a Rivers at the helm of Argyle Community Hospital for six generations, and Harper Rivers was set to take her father’s place whenever he decided to hang up his shingle. Unfortunately, the board of directors had other ideas—they accepted a buyout offer from a health care conglomerate with plans to close the hospital’s doors to the community that depended on it. And Presley Worth, a high-powered corporate financier, came to town to oversee the closure. Funny thing was, no one asked Harper, and she had no intentions of following anyone’s orders but her own—no matter how beautiful, smart, or commanding the new boss might be.

"So close..."
By ADK74
This had the potential to be another great book in the Radclyffe library, along the lines of her other well loved tales, but the 1st reviewer's complaint about the ending coming too soon is a serious one.

The differences between the two main characters are stark, and "suddenly" they jettison their dreams just to be together? Why? Harper set down fairly specific goals for her life, goals known not just to her family but to the new woman in her life but by the end of the book Presley didn't appear to agree with any of them besides staying local. I really felt like there was a third of the book missing and hope that the "explanation" isn't being saved for "volume 2". As much as I love reading her various book series... I want the next installment to broaden their world, not just try to explain what these two saw in each other in the first place besides pheromones. In "Against Doctor's Orders" Radclyffe continues to show her ability to spin a tale... I just want her to finish it before the final page.

Was it a waste of money? HARDLY! But it could have been much more, something I would have loved picking up again and again, like "Safe Harbor" or "Fated Love". Radclyffe, if your publisher is putting the brakes on your manuscripts to keep them short enough to print profitably, they are not doing you or us any favors.

Left hanging and wanting more
By Swaun
As others have reviewed; A standard from Rad in the format but the ending was abrupt and you are left unfulfilled as a reader. So much left unsaid and so much more could have been developed with these characters. This book leaves you wondering "what if" and "how are they" as you come to an ending that does not seem to fit with the evolution of the story.

I typically love every one of Rad's books, some more than others, but, lately they seem to be stuck in a loop that is more dictated by length than by substance.

better than Homestead
By kindle reader
F/F romance

Radclyffe took another shot at a rural/farming community story in this romance and this one blows on last year's Homestead by leaps and bounds. Thirty-four other reviewers posted at this time and only one touched upon the fact that the writing in this one is notably better compared to her other stuff of late. Unlike Homestead, it didn't feel phoned in and the care she put into it is reminiscent of some of her older work. There is so much description on the country setting... you can tell she loved it. And these characters were very much alive. I could easily see this one as a sweet and romantic little movie.

And I don't get the whining about the ending... it wrapped up quickly but genuinely and not so perfect it was silly. Sometimes we only *think* we know what our dreams are or what's important until we come face to face with better options-- ones that truly fulfill us (as opposed to ones that fulfill our parents or mimic what they are). I didn't need an epilogue to clarify that or to find out what happened next. I wouldn't give her any awards for originality, but you could tell she breathed life into every scene. I got plenty of love left for Radclyffe when her work feels like this one.

This one takes place in upland New York farm lands and centers around the Rivers' family dynasty and their long-time dedication to the 150 yr old Argyle Community Hospital. The family is headed by an old-time country physician who still does house calls and a southern-flavored wife who is big on meeting family obligations. And their four daughters: Harper Lee, Flannery O'Connor, Carson (as in Carson Mccullers), and Margie (or, Margaret Mitchell of Gone With the Wind fame). LOL. I love these southern writers and that their daughters are named after them. Add to that the suit-wearing hot blond corporate "villain" named Presley and it's not hard to see Rad wanted to take us back to early/mid 20th century America. Life in this little community and life in the Rivers' traditional home certainly is reminiscent of such.

Of the 4 daughters, the two oldest are lesbian butches (Harper, Flannery)... Harper being the oldest and heir... the tallest and the most broody with the usual dark hair and blue eyes... 3 yrs of medical practice and probably around 30ish. Flannery has golden brown hair, dark eyes, is supposedly the more charming of the two (pfft) and is a surgeon. They were twin-like and even though this was Harper's romance... Rad will probably give the overconfident Flannery-- or "Flann"-- her own book one day. Ack. Please don't, Rad. I can't stand your arrogant butches... and I can't take a whole book of Flannery's beautiful name reduced to Spanish jello. UTTER blasphemy, I tell ya...

Anyway. When the board of trustees sells off the community hospital in the midst of financial woes, in comes femme-side-with-no-femininity-emphasized Presley Worth, Vice President of Operations at SunView Heath Systems, who will oversee the transition of ACH into the SunView system. Basically, it's a corporate takeover whose main goal is to create profits. The argument between traditional, community-centered healthcare and big business healthcare becomes apparent and Rad puts herself on that fine line of preachy author propaganda and a good story that educates. This is her 3rd fall romance to follow an "issues" template and I have some mixed feelings about it.

On the one hand, you can see the argument taking place and some of the dialogue can feel contrived. On the other hand, if characterization and romance is done well enough and remains at the forefront, I won't care. Crossroads did a good job of integrating the midwife argument and those characters were well-developed... Homestead and its fracking drama was kind of awful all around. ADO wasn't in your face and z-z-z newsy like McGregor's Anyone But You... but if this is the latest trend in lesfic storytelling... I prefer it to talking dogs and pushing paranormal. Lesbians can't seem to resist pushing agendas once they get the power to do so. And I hope their scheming retreats and workshops will not forget that these are romances first and foremost... not political forums.

That said, I don't feel the argument hurt the story. I loved these leads, oh hell, even the butch this round. Harper was sweet, not arrogant, and not so damaged and controlling that she ended up a passive little girl in the sack. Nope. Her assertiveness was very sexy and I'm very pleased that Rad gave her both a backbone and a hot blonde. The sex scenes are very hot! We even got a break from the thigh sex, lol.

My biggest issue with this story is the lack of description on Presley. We know what Harper looks like and is wearing in practically every scene... I had a hard time imagining Presley. I liked the sibling issues that drew her close to Harper, but I'm not sure what Rad's issue is with celebrating femininity. A woman can be strong and still feminine. Too much is neglected about her characterization. Her clothes don't even match! She wears the same suit all day long, goes to a baseball game in it, sleeps in it... what?! I'm sorry but no self-respecting femme-side woman lives that far to neglect her appearance that much. And before the baseball game she slabs sunscreen on her face without even looking into a mirror with no mind to the make up she is surely wearing. WHAT?! Details, details... these things are important!! I mean, I don't need her cup size, but more character nuances, AT LEAST, would surely make her less blurry. As usual, I wish someone with a good eye for femininity would edit these stories and convince Rad that she can have two very interesting and hot leads instead of merely promoting butch pageantry.

Not a perfect story. But it's one of the better mixes and matches of Rad elements, in my opinion, and had a whole lot more love put into it. Also. There are no character cameos from other books (hate it when they get half/whole chapters!). No overcrowding of characters. No pointless medical drama. And no gratuitous B-level action scenes. These omissions alone made it a good story. But damn. Don't tell us baby kittens are probably abandoned in the barn and not get back to us about that till practically the end! wtf, Rad...

The best rotordynamics book
By kalvarez82@hotmail.com
The book recolect all the experience of the author about this subject. Contains the most importants aspects of rotordynamics: lateral analysis, torsional analysis and balancing and the influence of the bearings and seals on the instability of a machine. It also contains a very complete chapter about measurements. All these subjects are covered from the point of view of the matematician and from that of the technician. The book contains all the necesary references in this area and clarifying examples in every chapter.
