Book was a lot thicker than I anticipated, but it is because each page with text has both German and English on it. Otherwise there is a ton of great information in this book. Make sure you know how to use it properly, or use it with a lessons teacher that does know how to use it.

DOMESTICATION OF THE ENGLISH LANGUAGE IN AFRICAN PROSE FICTION

In his novel, The Voice(1964), Gabriel Okara attempts to translate his native Ijaw language into English. He asserts:"In order to capture the vivid images of African speech I had to eschew the habit of expressing my thoughts first in English" (quoted in Olaniyan and Quayson, 288). Okara's style of writing produces a variety of English in which idiom and syntax are radically altered. The English we read in this novel,is not standardized but domesticated English that constantly suggests the presence of another tongue. This double-voicedness is the quality that makes his fiction unique and challenging to the uninformed reader, the more so because Okara believes that there should be "a Nigerian or West African English which we can use to express our own ideas, thinking and philosophy in our own way" (Olaniyan and Quayson, 288). When Okara writes: "How can I change my inside? I see in my inside that your spoken words are true and straight" (49), it dawns on the non-African Anglophone reader that the writer has relexified and domesticated the English language to make it carry the weight of his Ijaw language and culture. This style of writing stems from the need to solve an immediate artistic problem: that of rendering African concepts, thought patterns and cultural peculiarities into a European language--English. This novel is truly fascinating!

A business book that delivers Q & As, with case studies to reinforce key principles and drive home core competences

A book that is geared toward the post graduate business student, as well as those entrepreneurial types who want gain insight as well core competencies that lead to being an effective entrepreneurial success. This is a readable text that gives the reader, a set of useful key summaries at the end of each topic section. This is done by the use of Q and A's to help reinforce areas of good practice as well as the essential tools, this then should hopefully deliver the message home. About the Author
Ruti Yudovich, a graduate of the University of Ben Gurion, has over 35 years of experience in teaching Biblical and Modern Hebrew to both children and adults. Her teaching career began in Beit Brodetzky, a prestigious ulpan, (an institute for the intensive study of Hebrew, designed to teach adult immigrants to Israel the basic language skills of conversation, writing and comprehension) and continued in Southern California, at the University of Judaism (now AJU), where she taught Modern and Biblical Hebrew, synagogues, Jewish schools and privately. Ms. Yudovich prepared thousands of boys, girls and adults for their Bar/Bat Mitzvah.

FINALLY A BOOK FOR ALL THAT HAS IT ALL!

Finally a book that has it ALL! Clear explanation so that anybody can learn it on his own. A unique way to know if you read a word correctly or not. Short and sweet explanations of Jewish terms. My son LOVED the exercises in the book and the repetition. He was eager to move from one chapter to the next without my help and not before long he read words with ease and excitement. I can't say enough about this book that my brother bought for my son. You are not only learning HOW to read Hebrew but you gain knowledge of Judaism and a taste and flavor of spoken Hebrew. We also received: Speak Hebrew for Real and I can hear my son speaking phrases and now he is willing to talk to me in my native language. Ruti Yudovich did an incredible job with this book. I can tell she is an experienced teacher who generously shared her knowledge with us. This book saved me a LOT of money on private tutors. Ruti Yudovich also included blessings and prayers that are requirements for Bar or Bat Mitzvah. What a treasure. I recommend this book to anybody, no matter of age, who is interested in learning how to read Hebrew. I recommend it to any tutor who can use it as his/her text book and of course to any teacher in any school. Thank you Ruti for your wonderful creation.

He found it very easy to follow and learn

My son used this book along, with the primer, to prepare for his bar mitzvah. He found it very easy to follow and learn, even though he hadn't attended Hebrew school. The author does a terrific job of color coding and systematizing the instruction in order to enhance pattern recognition and phonic assimilation. Highly recommend!

We tried a number of recommended approaches but did not go very far

I am a Sabra, so Hebrew comes with the territory for me. My girlfriend however is not. It was quite frustrating for me and her, particularly before a trip to Israel. So bringing her up to some ability in reading Hebrew is a point of independence in a foreign land.
We tried a number of recommended approaches but did not go very far. When I stumbled on this book it was an eye opener. This book flows like a kid learning a new skill.
For the first time I see that we are going places with this.

As Curator of Contemporary Design at Cooper Hewitt, Smithsonian Design Museum since 1992, she has produced numerous exhibitions and books, including Mechanical Brides: Women and Machines from Home to Office (1993), Mixing Messages: Graphic Design and Contemporary Culture (1996), Letters from the Avant-Garde (1996), Skin: Surface, Substance + Design (2002) and―most recently―Beautiful Users: Designing for People (2014). Lupton is a 2007 recipient of the AIGA Gold Medal, one of the highest honors given to a graphic designer or design educator in the US.

Poster design insights, for everyone who enjoys posters

"How Posters Work" is one of several new books published in celebration of the reopening of Cooper Hewett, the Smithsonian Design Museum in New York City, in December 2014 after a three-year renovation project. This book is authored (in some parts) and edited (in other parts) by Ellen Lupton, a Senior Curator at Cooper Hewett, the director of a Graphic Design master's degree program, and the writer of many important and influential books on design. In a little over 200 pages, filled with over 300 illustrations, the volume articulates several guiding concepts and shows numerous examples of "how posters work," resulting in a publication that is beneficial to working designers, design students, and those who simply appreciate the power and beauty possible in a 2-D printed message.

The first 70 pages of the book are dedicated to several well-illustrated essays, starting with Lupton's "Vision is a Process." She notes that the purpose of the book is to explain "how designers see" and to explore the many ways in which graphic designers apply key principles to achieve a communication goal. Then Lupton expands her premise by describing components of a graphic designer's methodology, such as "vision is active," "vision is immersive," and "vision is multisensory."

In the next essay, Caitlin Condell, another Cooper Hewett staff member, describes "How Posters Are Made," starting with the lithography process (invented in 1798) and continuing with technologies ranging from silk screen printing and various photographic processes to relatively recent innovations like digital printing and laser cutting.

The next few essays examine works by specific designers (sometimes with the designer explaining his own posters), including E. McKnight Kauffer, Bruno Munari, and a series of Dutch posters that experiment with use of a focal point.

Karrie Jacobs' essay "Night Discourse," first published in 1992, discusses political "protest" posters that appeared at night on New York City streets in the 1980s and 90s, including work by professional artists along with posters by "those who have anger but fewer skills."

In the final essay, "Collecting Posters," Gail S. Davidson of Cooper Hewett gives a history of how and why this museum added posters to its collection-- starting with an unsolicited gift of posters from World Wars I and II that arrived at Cooper Hewett in 1949, but expanding into deliberate efforts to document achievement in poster art from around the world, and throughout 20th and 21st century design history.

The remainder of the book, subtitled "Posters," is divided into 14 groups that convey key approaches to poster design, including foundational design principles such as "focus the eye," "simplify," "manipulate scale," and "tell a story" as well as possibly less-familiar techniques such as "assault the surface," "double the meaning," and "amplify." Each of these sections contains numerous examples of posters that apply the principle, and Lupton (and sometimes other authors) provide explanations and captions that help the reader understand why the use of these principles results in memorable posters. The sample works include famous names of the design field-- Rand, Bass, Glaser, Scher, Beall, van de Velde, Klutsis (spelled here as "Klucis"), Muller-Brockman, Matter, Vignelli, and Sagmeister, to mention only a few-- but the posters displayed from these iconic designers aren't always the "classics" seen in other compilations. Plenty of lesser-known designers' posters are featured as well.

The almost-square pages (about 9 inches by not-quite-10 inches) provide ample display space for the posters, many of which are full-page or half-page size, and all of the posters are reproduced in full color. The binding allows the book to open almost-flat for effective perusal of each poster. And although Amazon lists this book as "hardcover," the covers are more like a sturdy paperboard, which doesn't detract from the overall elegance of the volume, and makes the book surprisingly lightweight.

It's also surprisingly inexpensive. Therefore, I can't think of any reason that a poster aficionado (professional or amateur) wouldn't want to add this book to your collection.

It is not supposed to be the Holy Grail of self help books. There is none…You are worthwhile, & You have to find your own goals, within & without in Daily Life.
Keep this book around, & some years from now, do the whole thing again, as it will help you more, because you will, by then, understand & overstand, more.
It is common to feel frustrated, angry, sad, lonely, faithless, guilty, & un-loved. We do this to ourselves, & the World, out there, gives us plenty “reasons”. People are not easy to manage, including ourselves.
However, there is a Way to begin to find a Beauty within: a good self image, & build it, nuture, encourage, love, & cherish within. That way, you begin to change your behavior, as your feelings are based on self-love & inner worthiness. Get it?
It’s more than just a lot of work. It’s more than making changes. It is a Shift. You will discover how to leave your old places—vacate them--& be in a better place. Mentally, for sure; Emotionally, yeah!, Physically? You will be surprised.
Only one thing: you have to do the work. Even with a professional therapist, if you don’t do the work, nuttin’ happen. *alan* Thanks Wayne* you helped me.

Best self-help book out there

I'm reviewing this before having received it because I have been reading this book for 30 years and bought it at Amazon for a family member. It is the best self-help book ever. If our society paid attention to Wayne Dyer's message about being true to yourself and taking ownership for your life, the world would be a better place.
