Labled as 1st book in series, actually first 1/3 of a book.

I liked it until I got to the end and found out the book is not self contained. It is a gimmick to get you to buy the other two books in the series. This turned me off and I feel cheated since I thought I was buying an entire book. Seems a bit unethical and therefore I will not buy the last two books in the series.

Washington Post reporter Taylor frames a lively journalistic account of the 1988 U.S. presidential race with introductory and closing chapters assessing the bankruptcy of our trivialized, hyper-televised election process. There are blistering profiles of Gary Hart ("a rebel without a cause"), Michael Dukakis ("simply the last white man standing when Jesse Jackson came crashing through the gates"), noncandidate Mario Cuomo ("full of himself"). Taylor questions Bush's "contrived populism" and weighs J. Danforth Quayle's "unbearable lightness." His discussion of Jackson is grounded in an analysis of why racial issues have been "off the national agenda" since the 1960s. To raise the level of political discourse, Taylor proposes that each presidential candidate be granted five minutes of free time nightly on every TV and radio station in the country during the campaign's final weeks. Why We Never Got President Hart

Make no mistake, Paul Taylor is a gifted author and a talented journalist.
This is the story of Paul Taylor the Washington Post reporter that broke the story of Gary Hart and Donna Rice and ended Hart's chances at being President in 1988. More importantly, Taylor asked "the question" that changed the way media cover politicians.
"Did you commit adultery?" There it is. Simple by today's standards of DNA dresses and DWI Presidents.
By understand what happened to Hart, you can see the Clinton circus coming a mile away. Taylor gives honest account of one of the first political/media "feeding frenzies."
If you believe that Taylor didn't understand the watershed moment in politics he was creating when he asked Hart "the question" (and I'm not sure I buy it) than you can really get into Taylor's first hand account of the campaign, the challenge, the chase and the media explosion that followed.
The reason I gave it four stars and not five, is that Taylor gets too preachy in the end by using his experience with the demise of Hart to tell us what is wrong with Presidential politics and how we need to fix it.
The fact that he is right has nothing to do with it. He is right, but that's not why I bought the book.
In short: good writing, good story, good reference point to understand the media/presidential politics relationship. Worth the time to read but not going to change history as Taylor clearly hoped it would.

Excellent Snapshots From An Accidental Player

Paul Taylor is the reporter who used the `A word' to derail Gary Hart's floundering campaign in 1988. It's rare that a reporter has as much influence over the nomination process, and the book provides a unique insight into the campaign from someone who, however briefly, had a very real effect on the election. At first it might seem that Taylor's emphasis on his own actions smack of delusions of grandeur, but he is really out to examine the roll of the press in a campaign, and only emphasizes his role early on because of his importance in bringing down Hart. The book is not a nuts and bolts exploration of the trench warfare of the election in the tradition of Witcover and Germond, but rather a serious of snapshots of important moments in the campaign, well detailed and critically examined. As such it is not the best source for a detailed examination of the whole campaign but more a superb companion piece for such books. It also is an excellent summery for those who want a more general overview of the campaign. Highly recommended.

Perhaps the best SF short-story collection of all time.

Every SF fan has one book that they share with friends who don't read "that sci-fi stuff." This is the book I give to friends. It's one of the rare collections that work all the way through. You'll find clasic Varley stories here, like "Air Raid," "Gotta Sing, Gotta Dance," "Overdrawn at the Memory Bank," and "The Phantom of Kansas." But the title story is the best of the bunch; a heartbreakingly beautiful story of the quest for the trancendant, couched in a questioning of whether physical disabilities can free people, as well as limit them. If you can find this book used, snap it up; if it's ever back in print, grab two copies. You'll need one to read now, and one as a backup for when you wear the first copy out. Or maybe so you can share it with a friend.

A friend recommended this to me, and amazingly my local used bookstore had a hardcover copy! These are some of the BEST short stories I have read! Right up there with Asimov and Arthur C. Clarke. (I also saw a low-budget movie version on the Sci-Fi Channel) Air Raid seems to be a precursor to Millenium.

Myers (born 1942) is a professor of psychology at Hope College; he has written/cowritten many books, such as The human puzzle: Psychological research and Christian belief, The inflated self, Psychology Through the Eyes of Faith, Psychology & Christianity, What God Has Joined Together: The Christian Case for Gay Marriage, etc. Malcolm Jeeves is a psychology professor who has also written books such as Psychology & Christianity: The view both ways. [NOTE: page numbers below refer to the 224-page 1987 edition.]

They wrote in the Foreword of this 1987 book, "It is the conviction of the authors... that although psychology and Christianity are profoundly different, yet they interact... It is our conviction ... that Christianity is not just an expression of feelings or values but that it incorporates a body of claims; and that those claims are not just about God but about this world of ours, especially its human beings. Christianity incorporates nothing less than a world view. And about the human beings in that world, psychology speaks." (Pg. ix) They add, "This book is about the relationship between what psychologists are discovering and what Christians believe. Unlike most other books on psychology and religion, this one... identifies major insights regarding human nature that college and university students will encounter in a basic psychology course and ponders how the resulting human image connects with Christian belief." (Pg. xiii)

They suggest, "different levels of explanation can be complementary. The methods of psychology are appropriate, and appropriate ONLY, for their own purposes. Psychological explanation has provided satisfying answers to many important questions regarding why people think, feel, and act as they do. But it does not even pretend to answer life's ultimate questions. Let us therefore celebrate and use psychology for what it offers us, never forgetting what it cannot accomplish." (Pg. 9-10) They add, "Believing that both the natural and biblical data reveal God's truth, we can allow scientific and theological perspectives to challenge and inform each other... There is an additional reason why the Bible does not give us a completed psychology and why we therefore need psychological science. The Scriptures must embody truth not just for us in our twentieth century age but for all people, past, present, and future." (Pg. 15-16)

They argue, "Although Christian faith does not promise escape from the stresses and woes of life, it can help us walk through the valley of deepest darkness. It does so first by offering us an identity---a knowledge of who we are, of our ultimate values, of our mission in life... Second, religious communities offer support in times of stress... Finally, religious experience has the potential to be therapeutic." (Pg. 149-150)

About the Author
David M. Crowe is President Emeritus of the Association for the Study of Nationalities at Columbia University and a member of the Education Committee of the United States Holocaust Memorial Museum in Washington, D.C. He is currently a Fellow at the Center for Slavic, Eurasian, and East European Studies at the University of North at Carolina at Chapel Hill. His award-winning books include A History of the Gypsies of Eastern Europe and Russia and The Baltic States and the Great Powers: Foreign Relations, 1938-1940. He teaches at Elon University.

This is a necessary and important book to read

This is an excellent book to read and has some of the magic of Thomas Keneally's book. His graphic reporting of life in Plaszow concentration camp is historically valuable ( and necessary ). Of particular interest is that David Crowe leaves the legend of Schindler's getting his female workers out of Auschwitz and bribing the camp commandant up in the air. Maybe it happened - maybe it didn't. Of particular interest which is not covered elsewhere is David Lowe's valuable analysis and comments of Schindler's personality in wartime and after the war. In wartime he was out to make his fortune, a nazi, a Sudeten German, devious, manipulative, duplicitous, successful, a fox, certainly a fox, yet a brave, very brave man who cared for his Jews ( his children ). At the end of the day he saved 1,100 Jews and many people today are grateful to him for that. Schindler epitomizes a great man with all his human imperfections. David Crowe's book is an excellent read. I do recommend also a visit to Krakow and places of interest mentioned in David Crowe's book including Oscar Schindler's factory, the Square of the Empty Chairs, Plaszow, and the Auschwitz - Biirkenau State Museum.

Not What I'd Hoped

A good biography, to me, has always been a book where the reader truly gets to know the person he or she is reading about. In that regard, this book tends to fail. Not that isn't a truly informative book, far from it, but instead it reads like a history book...chronologically (mostly) moving from early life to old age, giving out facts, quotes, and stories about Schindler's life so that by the last page you feel as though you know ABOUT his life, but not really WHY he lived it (ironically my greatest "insights" in Schindler come from quoted intelligence files ABOUT him confiscated after the war, not the author's words).

Maybe this problem is endemic more to the man than the other. He (apparently) was a many-faceted man and that could make writing a book to make the reader understand him difficult. Still, just because a historic figure is "difficult" to understand doesn't mean he can't be written about in such a way as the reader can come to understand who this person really was and to be honest I just don't really think I can say I have that idea after having read the book (I personally think, for good or bad, that the movie gave me a better impression than the book).

So...if you want to learn about the man and what he did (and all the tangential characters that he ran across in his life) this is the book for you. If you are looking for a book that gives you the facts of his life AND the understanding of the man, you might do better to look elsewhere.

Outstanding Resource!!

Worth every dime!!! Anita Rui Olds has incredible insight into creating environments that are reflective of children and their interests. She believes that a child care setting should have "spirit." Included are Reggio-type environmental solutions that create a sense of wonder with an architecturally aesthetic sensibility. Lots of great ideas packed into this book. Only regret is that the pictures are too small and not in color. Would have been worth extra [$$] to have an expanded edition.

Fantastic resource, terrible photographs.

This is the first review I've ever felt compelled to write on Amazon. I'm so torn on this book-- Anita Rui Olds was absolutely the preeminent authority on designing spaces for young children, and the value of the information contained in this book alone makes it worth its weight in gold. But I was so terribly disappointed at the quality of the practically-newsprint, see-through pages and dark black & white photos! Even the COLOR charts are in black & white! A large portion of the value of these sorts of curriculum and environmental design guides is in the photographs, which provide both examples of the ideas outlined in the text and further inspiration. This is why I recommend a book like "Designs for Living and Learning" and other books by Deb Curtis and Margie Carter, because the photos in those books are absolutely gorgeous and definitely serve to inspire teachers and other early childhood professionals. But if you're planning to open a childcare center and you need the nitty-gritty details on what shape you want the building to be, how to lay out the floor plan, what colors to paint based on the age group of the children and purpose of the space, etc, then buy this book and just try to ignore the photos, because the information alone will be worthwhile for you.

Long awaited, exceeds expectations

Lavish use of illustrations--photos, sketches, floor plans, and examples--and attractive layout support Ms. Olds's incisive text to create a remarkably accessible book. Many hundreds of child care professionals and architects who have studied under Ms. Olds will recognize and welcome this work as the summation of the concepts that placed the author at the forefront of her field.
More and more children are in institutional care and, "in search of a model," day care typically happens in society's "leftover" spaces, church basements, warehouses, and places intended for adults. This book will help anyone committed to doing better for our children to "see that young children are raised in nurturing, spirited settings that honor their precious young souls." (from the introduction)
The book's only drawback is technical as the reproduction of photographs is of disappointing quality.
Tragically, Anita Olds did not live to see this book published. We can be thankful that she left it for us, full of her passion for children. In its use we will honor her spirit as we effect her designs.
