About the Author

Aleksandar Prokopec

Aleksandar Prokopec is a software developer and a concurrent and distributed programming researcher. He holds an MSc in Computing from the Faculty of Electrical Engineering and Computing, University of Zagreb, Croatia, and a PhD in Computer Science from the Ecole Polytechnique Federale de Lausanne, Switzerland. As a doctoral assistant and member of the Scala team at EPFL, he actively contributed to the Scala programming language, and has worked on programming abstractions for concurrency, data-parallel programming support, and concurrent data structures for Scala. He created the Scala Parallel Collections framework, which is a library for high-level data-parallel programming in Scala, and participated in working groups for Scala concurrency libraries, such as Futures and Promises and ScalaSTM.

Scala community needed this for a while

I really enjoyed reading this book. The Scala community needed a manual such as this for a while now. Before this book, documentation on concurrent programming in Scala consisted mostly of online SIP documents, tutorials scattered across multiple websites, Stackoverflow answers and random blog posts. This results in scattered, incomplete and often convoluted information about Scala concurrency. Learning Concurrent Programming in Scala constitutes a readable and authoritative manual on using these concurrency libraries, with everything needed to get you started in one place. Although I recommend getting acquainted with sequential programming in Scala first, people who want to write concurrent programs in Scala should definitely read this book. That does not mean that the book is valuable only for Scala programmers - as someone with 11 years of industry experience in Java, I can honestly say that the concurrency novelties described in this book will be interesting to programmers coming from backgrounds different than Scala - there was much going on in the Scala world in the recent years, in which Java is still lagging behind (in fact, I was able to convince one of my colleagues at work to give Scala a try after he saw the introduction to the Rx framework in this book).

The book starts by presenting the basics of JVM threading and memory model, which serves as the basic . Although this is more low-level than the rest of the concurrency frameworks in the book, the book does a good job arguing why you need to understand basic JVM concurrency, and when to use threads, locks and monitors. Chapter 3 shows the classic concurrency abstractions, such as concurrent data structures, atomics, and thread pools, and explains lock-free programming. Chapter 4 is where the fun begins - it explains the futures and promises concurrency package, shows how to use it for asynchronous programming, how to functionally compose asynchronous computations, how to write new future combinators using promises, shows how to do proper cancellation and blocking in futures, and explains the Scala Async framework. Chapter 5 introduces parallel collections, shows how they differ from normal collections, discusses operations that can be parallelized, shows how to implement custom parallel operations, and how to evaluate performance in your programs. Chapter 6 introduces Rx, asynchronous programming framework based on first-class event streams, and shows how Rx can be used to build user interfaces and streaming applications. Chapter 7 deals with software transactional memories, discusses how STMs work, shows how to avoid side-effects in transactions, how to execute transactions conditionally, explains how transactional collections work, and, importantly, illustrates how easy it is to create a custom transactional, thread-safe collection. Chapter 8 introduces actor programming using Akka, and covers asynchronous message sends, starting and looking up actors, the basics of actor supervision, as well distributing the application across multiple computers. While Akka is not completely covered in this book, as it is a big topic, this chapter teaches the essentials of Akka, and you will be able to write actor programs after you're done. Chapter 9 shows how to achieve scalability and top performance in concurrent applications, what are the common types of errors in concurrent applications, and how to debug them, and, finally, how to combine different concurrency technologies to build a real-world application - a remote file browser. This is the longest chapter, and arguably, it could have been split into two separate chapters.

This is a hands-on book. Every concurrency concept is introduced through a minimal, self-contained example, and you are encouraged to code and try the examples yourself. In almost all places in the book, there is a snippet or a minimal example program that demonstrates or proves the preceding claim. Terms like starvation, deadlock, false sharing and rollbacks are never introduced without the corresponding example program that shows how these effects manifest themselves in practice. These programs are minimal examples, but are realistic and capture the essence of the corresponding real-world programs. I'm sure that, after having written and run the examples, the reader will have no problem recognizing the same effects in practice.

Every chapter is concluded with a list of references, and practical program assignments, which test the knowledge from the corresponding chapter, and, in some cases, touch more advanced topics.

What I especially liked about this book is that the author shows how different concurrency libraries can be used together. As an occasional by-stander in the Scala world, I've often witnessed propaganda and bias towards specific concurrency technologies. This is not the case only with Scala and its concurrency libraries, but also more broadly, with most programming technologies - proponents of specific programming technologies need to ruthlessly advertise their own frameworks to survive. As a result, they sometimes claim that their technology is the best, applicable to every problem or superior to alternatives. The author dismisses such attitude in two ways. First, he explains the underlying motivations for various concurrency primitives and shows their typical use-cases and usage scenarios. In doing so, he teaches the reader what a specific concurrency construct is most appropriate for. Second, he shows that concurrency primitives coming from different frameworks are not incompatible or mutually exclusive, but that they can and should be used together to tackle a task. For example, futures are ideal for issuing remote procedure calls or asynchronous requests, but parallel collections are more efficient for data-intensive tasks. Actors are great for distributed applications, but software transactional memory composes complex state and allows concurrent access to data. Still, the future can start a data-parallel computation or a transaction, and an Rx stream can send messages to an actor - these primitives support each other.

What I'd wish to see more of are advanced concurrency concepts - how does one write his own concurrent data structure, or implement more advanced applications. The book touches performance engineering and achieving best program speeds, and, having read about it, I'd love to learn more. Perhaps a follow-up book about more advanced concurrent programming will address this. Still, this is overall a great book, and will teach you how to think about concurrent programming. I recommend it as an introductory book on concurrent programming, and modern concurrency paradigms.

This book if a great resource for learning concurrent programming in Scala. Actually, it is great for learning concurrent programming in general!

The book starts out with elementary concurrency building blocks. Each subsequent chapters builds on the blocks seen before, to introduce higher level abstractions, which make it easier to write more complex concurrent programs. At the same time, you won't be lost if you are only interested in later chapters: every chapter gives you sufficient context to understand it in isolation.

I love that there are exercises that come with every chapter. They are by no means easy, but very fun and engaging. Many of them are not just programming tasks, but require you to sit down with pen and paper and think for a while. As a result the book satisfies two types of audiences:
- The seasoned Scala developer who needs to refer to a resource every once in a while
- A newbie who wants to learn about concurrent programming in general, and who is interested in building practical solutions with this knowledge. I definitely fall in this category of people, and am now completely hooked.

All in all, this book strikes a pedagogical balance between being a text book and a reference book. Studying it cover to cover (and trying to solve some of the exercises) will give you great insights about concurrent programming.

The only issue I have is with the quality (or lack thereof) of the illustrations/pictures. They have a poor scan look, they could definitely be much improved. Also, I wonder if there is going to be some sort of answer key, at least for a selected subset of the exercises.

I think the book strikes a very good balance between breadth and depth

You can tell right away that this book was written by a true authority on concurrent programming in Scala. It’s written for programmers already familiar with Scala or for those with a strong background in related languages and/or the JVM. If you are one of them and are interested in getting an overview of different abstractions for concurrent programming in Scala, or more broadly on the JVM, go pick up this book!

The book is very well written and the examples are interesting. It is roughly organized going from low-level to high-level concepts, concluding with a practical example that connects the different abstractions introduced in earlier chapters. Chapter 5 is a bit different than the others as it mostly deals with parallel programming (with collections) rather than concurrent programming, although it shortly relates the two. Since the book can’t cover every single aspect of each subject on 300 pages, most chapters give helpful references to obtain a deeper understanding and background information on the subject. I think the book strikes a very good balance between breadth and depth. It covers all important abstractions and discusses them in just the right amount of detail.

My only gripe is with the book’s design and typesetting. Many figures don’t look too professional and have a rather low resolution, which is noticeable in my paper copy as well as the ebook version. For the price of the book, I’d expect a little more care. Nonetheless, the figures are helpful for the understanding of the subject.

In the end, it’s the content that matters most to me, that’s why I won’t hesitate to give it 5 stars.

Must-Read Papers for Meta-Ethicists

This is a fabulous collection of papers. It covers the most important papers from Foot's in the period from the 50s to the 70s, and it includes several classics of twentieth-century meta-ethics (e.g. "Moral Arguments," "Moral Beliefs," and "Morality as a System of Hypothetical Imperatives").
While Foot's most important work has been in meta-ethics, this collection includes some quality papers in normative ethics. The opening paper, "Virtues and Vices," is one of the works that helped to resurrect virtue ethics as a research program in contemporary analytic philosophy. Also included are "Abortion and the Doctrine of Double Effect," and Foot's paper on euthanasia. There are also a couple of papers on the history of philosophy, one on Hume and one on Nietzsche. These historical concerns reflect the two major projects that have been central to Foot's meta-ethical thinking throughout her career: (i) defending a form of cognitivism against various forms of noncognitivism, and (ii) understanding the relation between moral obligations and reasons for action. She is interested in the classical empiricists (and especially Hume) as a source of contemporary assumptions about reasons and psychology that lead to noncognitivism, and she is concerned with Nietzsche's challenges to morality and their relevance to thinking about the connection between moral obligation and reasons for action.
And Foot's two fundamental concerns in meta-ethics--cognitivism vs. noncognitivism, and the connection between reasons and moral obligations--are represented by several papers in this collection. Several of the most important papers here (viz. "Moral Arguments," "Moral Beliefs," and "Goodness and Choice") attack noncognitivism, and especially the sorts of noncognitivism accepted by Stevenson and Hare. In several papers she questions Hume's Law according to which one cannot infer an 'ought' from an 'is'. In particular, she wants to argue that there are descriptive requirements on what counts as evidence for and against moral views, and that it is impossible to understand certain claims with the formal components or attitudinal concomitants that noncognitivists claim characterize ethical discourse as moral claims. Moreover, she claims that it is unclear that there is any sort of feeling or attitude or desire that must be connected with a judgment for that judgment to be considered a moral judgment. So it's unclear that those judgments express such feelings or attitudes or desires.
Here her aim is to argue for a form of cognitivism. Pace Hare (and his purely formal account of moral language), there are content constraints on what counts as a moral opinion. And pace emotivists and expressivists, having a certain attitude or an emotion is neither necessary nor sufficient for making a moral claim. Minimally, Foot argues, moral opinions must be concerned with human good and harm, and this rules out certain views as moral views--even if those views have the form of universalizable prescriptions or are accompanied by whatever attitudes a noncognitivist considers to be distinctively moral. If you want to engage in genuine moral discussion, you have to accept facts about human good and harm as evidence in the argument. If you ignore such evidence when it is brought forward, you are opting out of the moral debate. Indeed, it is unclear that we can understand a person who isn't responsive to such evidence as putting forward and defending moral opinions at all.
This collection also allows the reader to observe the evolution of Foot's views about the connection between moral obligations and reasons for action. The problem with which she is dealing arises from the apparent inconsistency of the following three claims: (a) moral obligations provide everyone with reasons for action; (b) different people have different desires and interests; and (c) people's reasons for actions depend on their desires and interests. There is a prima facie tension here: moral obligations are supposed to provide everyone with reasons for action, and yet the basis of reasons for action are different from person to person.
Now, these three claims aren't straightforwardly inconsistent. It is possible that moral obligations will have a sort of connection to different people's desires and interests that allows them to provide everyone with reasons for action, even though different people have different desires and interests. Being just, for example, may be to everyone's advantage, irrespective of their particular desires and interests. Still, it appears to be against many people's desires and interests; it appears that being just often requires a person to put aside her own desires and interests in order to do the right thing. But one might take on the project of showing that, notwithstanding the appearance to the contrary, being just really will contribute to everyone's diverse desires and interest. This would provide some evidence for the view that everyone has reason to act justly.
Foot's appears to have been somewhat sympathetic to this sort of project when she wrote "Moral Beliefs"--or, at least, she was willing to consider the possibility that this project might be successful. But she gradually became much more skeptical about the ordinary view that moral obligations always provide people with reasons for action. This skepticism received its fullest expression in "Morality as a System of Hypothetical Imperatives." There she held that it may be the case that only those who have a desire to be moral have good reason to, say, be just in all cases. She thought that there may be immoralists, people who simply don't care about morality, for whom moral obligations do not provide reasons for action in many (or even all) cases. We can still say that these people are morally obligation to be just, but they don't have reasons to be just since they lack the relevant interests and desires that make it the case that most people have reason to act justly in most cases. (In her more recent work Foot has opted for a different response to these issues. She now thinks that moral obligations do in fact provide people with reasons for action, but she denies that reasons for action are based on people's desires and interests. For more on this, see her more recent collection Moral Dilemmas and her book Natural Goodness.)
I can't recommend this book enough. Go out and buy it if you're interested in contemporary meta-ethics.

Really nice quality, nice variety of pictures as well. Single sided, but not perforated. Color key does not have names of colors but finished pictures are included which can help decipher some of the colors. Good combination also of smaller and larger details to color. Good addition to the color by number books available!

A brilliant achievement

This is a truly remarkable book. The authors sought to unite poetics (literary theory) with criticism (evaluation of literature) with scholarship (research) and literary history (the dynamics of literature in contrast with the statics of theory and criticism). This had to be done in a book of reasonable size, without being eclectic or doctrinaire.
The authors succeeded in their aim and the book achieved a vast and somewhat unexpected popularity, especially as a grad student text. It has been in print forever and has been translated into many languages.
Much of the burden of writing fell on Rene Wellek because Austin Warren (not to be confused with another friend of Wellek, the poet and novelist Robert Penn Warren) was seriously distracted during the project by the protracted illness and death of his wife. Fortunately the job was in good hands because there is not much doubt that Wellek is the premier scholar of literature in modern times. He combined all-round mastery of many of the specialisms that constitute modern literary studies, encyclopaedic reading in several languages, a humane vision and commitment to reason.
The book has four parts, first Definitions and Distinctions; with five chapters including 'The Nature of Literature' and 'Literary Theory, Criticism and History'. The second part, Preliminary Operations has a chapter on the ordering and establishment of evidence. Part three The Extrinsic Approach to the Study of Literature, has five chapters including 'Literature and Biography', 'Literature and Psychology' and 'Literature and Society'. Part four, The Intrinsic Study of Literature, contains
eight chapters including 'Style and Stylistics', 'Literary Genres', 'Evaluation' and 'Literary History'.
The chapter titled "The Mode of Existence of a Literary Work of Art" is especially interesting because it gives the lie to the claim that modern literary theory and criticism (exemplified by the deconstructionists) have achieved an unprecedented level of philosophical sophistication. They worked through five possibilities, referring to "the poem" as shorthand for any sort of literature, or perhaps any cultural artefact.
1. The poem is a physical artefact consisting of marks on paper, or the grooves on a Babylonian tablet.
2. The poem is the sequence of sounds uttered by a speaker, reading aloud.
3. The poem is the experience of the reader.
4. The poem is an expression of the experience of the author.
5. The poem is a stratified complex of values, which cannot be reduced to any of the previous four theories.
They rejected (1) because a poem can be preserved in a purely oral tradition. Also the precise physical form of the work is not crucial. Hamlet is the same regardless of the size of the pages or the typeface or errors in typesetting or translation of particular editions.
They dismissed (2) because we do not read for the sounds alone, we read for plot and character and much more besides. As for (3) they argued that readers are influenced by all manner of personal circumstances ranging from their own theories of poetry and value to momentary conditions such as fatigue, worry or distraction.
The fourth type of theory takes two broad forms; in one the poem represents the intentions of the writer, in the other it reflects in some sense the totality of experience of the author, conscious and unconscious. The first of these views has little credibility because the so-called Intentional Fallacy has taken a severe beating in modern times. The second splits in half again, yielding deep psychological accounts of the work on one hand, and on the other, theories that account for the work as the outcome of large-scale historical and social influences bearing on the writer.
Wellek and Warren reject all the foregoing (while allowing some scope for investigations along those lines). They favour (5), a combination of phenomenology and modern linguistics.
"The work of art, then, appears as an object of knowledge sui generis which has a special ontological status. It is neither real (like a statue) nor mental (like the experience of light or pain) nor ideal (like a triangle). It is a system of norms of ideal concepts, which are intersubjective. They must be assumed to exist in collective ideology, changing with it, accessible only through individual mental experiences based on the sound-structure of its sentences."
This perspective clearly has many points of contact with Popper's three world theory of material bodies, subjective minds and objective ideas. The poem is more than a physical (world 1) object because is partly a subjective (world 2) event, and there is even more than that because it has some form of intersubjective existence. Wellek and Warren address this aspect in terms of collective ideology, while Popper speaks of the partial autonomy of the contents. Each formulation calls for a theory about emergent possibilities, sui generis qualities that cannot be reduced, without loss, to the more basic physical and subjective aspects of the poem, in the same way that the higher functions of language cannot be fully reduced to the lower functions.

John Brown is a registered architect, licensed real estate broker, and a Professor of Architecture in the Faculty of Environmental Design, University of Calgary. In 2009 he received a Leadership Award from Residential Architect in recognition of his work to increase public awareness about the value of design.

Matthew North has a master s degree in architecture. He is a licensed real estate agent and has 12 years experience in the residential construction industry.

Together with Carina van Olm, John and Matthew are the founders of the Slow Home Movement and housebrand, an award-winning architecture, construction, and real estate practice based in Calgary, Canada.

Good Ideas in Principle

I liked the idea of this book, slow design over a quick fix. They've really hit the nail on the head with the concept. However, I found the book too preachy. I appreciated the reference to slow food, but there was too much on that topic given that this is a design book. I thought there were too few real examples given the fact the author states they had researched many more floor plans. I wished there would have been more examples of subtle changes to existing plans, the townhouse example ended up basically being a complete gut of the building to solve the clients' problem. The author writes the examples in a way that one would write a book of fiction, it made the book move slow and, in my opinion, took credibility away from what the main point of the book.
Overall, if you have never read a book about why houses are designed in a particular way, this book would be ok.

DESIGN MUST HAVE

A brilliant concept thoughtfully and simply communicated. This book should be part of any designer's foundation conceptualisation of architecture, interior design, environmental concerns and design ethics. The elegant concepts are illustrated with a variety of straightforward examples and the authors generously share their methodology of domestic design analysis. If you're even considering buying a house or live in one you need this book.

Brilliant introduction to architectural disasters

This is a sweet little book about how to read a house plan. The authors defend the idea that architects sell ostentation and useless grandiosity because we like it, just the same way that fast food sells sugar, grease and fat because we like it. The point is well made and well taken. It explains why one finds so many castle-looking houses on the Web with only 3 bedrooms. They are usually much too expensive for their size. The belief in the clients's vanity explains that most roofs are complex with no reason. It explains the gigantic entryways with no closet and all the pretentious leftovers of the Victorian era. It leaves the client with an expensive house but not with a very good space.
A few good examples are given, I would have wished for more. I was annoyed because there is no dimension on any plan. In the abstract, you can see the flaw, but it would be nice to estimate it concretely. Also the flaws that the authors talk about happen in houses of any size and it should have been properly demonstrated.
I like the authors, they have a series of talks on YouTube that is worth checking out and it complements this book.

I love this book

I love this book! Not just a collection of pretty pictures of gardens, (although there are lots of them) this book actually helps you to think through your own designs. Tons of clever ideas provide a starting point, and her helpful hints can save you from a great many "learning" experiences figuring out why what you have isn't what you want.
