About the Author
Glenn Barr is one of Detroit's most celebrated and successful underground artists. His paintings have appeared in galleries from Seattle and San Francisco to New York City. Glenn's work has been featured in a variety of comics and graphic novels such as Mad, DC Comics and Paradox Press as well as in a series of self published books called Heep. Barr's contribution to animation include background styling for The Ren and Stimpy Show, Bjork's I Miss You video and The New Woody Woodpecker Show. Recognition for his paintings came with solo exhibitions in the late 1990s Since then, he has exhibited internationally and published compilations of his work in "Lowlife Paradise" (2003), "Haunted Paradise" (2006) and his new volume, "Faces."

Much to short.

I am pretty disappointed with how short this book is and how little information there is in it. I expected something much more in depth. Instead the author briefly explains the various topics and then tells you to go find more information somewhere else. This isn't how a study guide should be in my opinion.

There's better out there

This is not the best book for the Afoqt, let me explain...
Background: I taught math and physics, have my math and psychology degree, and have taken the SATs 3 times for competition reasons, the ACT, numerous PRAXIS exams, and the gre (I'm fairly use to big tests)
1. I have NEVER had a study book thinner than my thumb for an important test and would have never expected this book to be so thin (yes, thickness isn't always fluff)! Keep in mind, you can only take the test twice and 6m after the first attempt. If you want to get into the AF, you need to do well the first time. If you want to be a pilot or navigator, you need to do EXCEPTIONALLY well. You won't get anything but partials this book.
2. There's only one practice test and it takes up half the book. Practice tests can typically be taken twice before they significantly lose their purpose. A really good guide will have more than one test and practice questions after each learning section (which is one reason why it has three stars but could use twice as many).
3. If you really wanted to, you could get through this book in a weekend. Most of the learning sections are filled with dummy level info -only helpful to those who've never taken a significant test or who know nothing about the subject.
4. The sections themselves and the practice are VERY BASIC... Too basic. You're going to experience much harder questions on the actual AFOQT and need to be properly challenged prior to the test if you'd like to blow it out of the water. Aim high, right?

My advice: don't buy this one.
If you're hurting on particular subject, get a subject study book (Barron).
There are also DOZENS of apps to help with any one particular area. Believe me, you can get your hands on some pretty good apps for well under $30 (and even free).
If you know of someone who has the ASVAB study guide, borrow it. It has additional sections that you can skip but is an excellent start for serious studying.
BUY the military flight aptitude test by Barron, it's one of the best out there.
Remember, any tool for studying should only be "refreshers" even the word knowledge and math. That means practicing is going to be the Best use of your time. Remember those apps I mentioned? They're your best resource!
If you're still sure about buying this, I can say the reading section is actually ok but does not vary it's questions for each passage.
The biggest advantage of this book is the personality sections. Most books completely ignore this component of the test but it is, in fact, extremely important. This section is going to help the AF determine whether you're good for a top secret, if you can handle a big work load, if you understand how to work as a team and an individual, and if killing someone is going to be too difficult for you. You have to careful with this section, as simple as it may seem. You could easily answer your way out of a career.

If you want barely passing scores then buy this.

This book provided some very very easy and basic samples of about half of what is on the actual test. The test is much harder and had more geometry and aviation history and knowledge questions than this book offered. The algebra and arithmetic had another layer of difficulty in each question. I passed my AFOQT with bare minimum scores enough to allow me to apply for OTS however this book did not help me in getting scores that would allow me to apply for the ROTC programs. You need at least a 62 in one area for the POC-ERP and SOAR program. I recommend using an SAT prep book to get you ready for the math and reading material. This book really only helped with the compass, blocks, and chart reading which a monkey could do. The test explains how to do that stuff anyways before you start. none of the aviation knowledge material covered in here was even asked on the test. Waste ...

About the Author

Overlooked mulilinguistic odyssey

Oreo is the name of a brilliant black-and-Jewish girl who sets out in search of her father. The story is an absurd picaresque quest, overtly paralelling the journey of the Greek hero Theseus.

Oreo isn't for everyone. You'll enjoy Oreo if you like puns, enjoy linguistics, appreciate mythological allusions, or like thinking about the sociology and history of racism in America.

The writing is full of multilingual puns and linguistic twists. I constantly felt that I might be missing some of the jokes due to ignorance of one or another language. To catch everything, one would need to know English, Black Vernacular English ("Jive"), Yiddish, German, French, Italian, and who knows what else. For example, one character in the book speaks entirely in English words, but used translated French idioms. Another typical example: a shopkeeper tucked his hands next to his "stove-bellied pot." Even Oreo's last name is a pun: Schwartz (German and Yiddish for "black"). Occasionally the writing snaps into the author's voice and becomes explicitly self-conscious.

I enjoyed the variety of mental practices exercised by the characters--"head equations," rationalizations, and observation games to pass the time.

Suggestions for readers: Do keep a Yiddish dictionary nearby (The Joys of Yiddish by Leo Rosten was a good choice for me). Do review the story of the journey of Theseus (see Wikipedia or the author's key at the back of Oreo). Do not read the foreword before you read the book.

The foreword (2000 printing, by Harryette Mullen) seems deliberately designed to suck the life out of the text. It's wordy, more analytical than insightful, and contains spoilers.

I discovered Oreo through a 2011 review on NPR, which proclaimed it ahead of its time and one of the funniest works ever written. I agree that it's funny, but not that funny. I downgraded my rating due to one chapter of explicit pornography which added little to the story.

Great rediscovery

It's great that the book is being reissued. It's as timely now as it was in 1974. The coming of age story of a daughter looking for her father in New York is timeless and written in such humorous way that it's no surprise that the author was writing for Richard Pryor. The novel is also one of the food novels that makes one forget when it was originally written given popularity of the genre today. The author loves the English language and so it's a pleasure to read. It's sad that the author only published this one novel and died in 1985 at age 50.

It's brilliant! So witty, erudite, original...I don't want to keep adding superlatives. Suffice it to say that it's delightful to read and a major addition to the field. Or was, and then was lost, and thankfully has now been reprinted so all of us can experience it.

Absolutely Wonderful NKJV Study Bible

I purchased 2 bonded leather copies of this Bible back in the mid-nineties - one to use on a daily basis and one kept in its original box for when the other wears out. Well, it has been 16 or 17 years and I'm still using the first one. It seems my eyesight is wearing out faster than this superb Study Bible.
That being said, I wish it were available in a large print version. This is not my only Study Bible, but it is one of the top 3 or 4 that I own, and because of the thought-provoking articles such as the "Diamonds for Daily Living", and the well-done charts & maps, (as well as the fact that it isn't a large as a coffee table), it is usually the Bible I take when I will be away from home for days or weeks.
The New King James Version is clear and relatively straight-forward, if not quite as literal a translation as the NASB. As far as NKJV Study Bibles go, thus far this is the only one that is as equally outstanding as the now out-of-print "Believer's Study Bible" which is also a real gem - in my opinion the Prophecy Study Bible & the Believer's Study Bible are both "must-buys". Well worth looking for copies of each of them.

Postmodern Fairy Tales

Cristina Bacchilega's exploration of postmodern revisions and appropriations of fairy tales is a superb endeavor. She provides an excellent overview of the fairy tale as a genre and goes on to explicate narrative and gender strategies in well-known tales like "Snow White," "Little Red Riding Hood," "Beauty and the Beast" and "Bluebeard." She frames her analysis of postmodern tales through a deconstructive lens, looking for each revision's ability to challenge conventional fairy tale morals, to be both "questioning and affirmative without necessarily being recuperative or politcally subversive." Her approach is exciting and her analysis brings new depth and meaning to fairy tales, making the familiar new once again.

Great fairytale scholarship

Bacchilega outlines her main questions for this research in her introduction: "Three questions direct my efforts. What kind of images of woman and story do these rewritings/revisions project? What narrative mechanisms support these images? And finally which ideologies of the subject underlie these images? In short, this book explores the production of gender, in relation to narrativity and subjectivity, in classic fairy tales as re-envisioned in late twentieth-century literature and media for adults."

To this end, she analyzes the retellings of 4 fairy tales: Snow White, Little Red Riding Hood, Beauty and the Beast, and Bluebeard. She unpacks the works of writers such as Angela Carter, Margaret Atwood, and Robert Coover, just to name a few, in order to determine in what ways the authors use fairy tales to subvert the gender strategies of the original tales. She argues that these tales are postmodern in their deconstruction of gender politics within fairy tales. She focuses specifically on 'mirroring,' how these tales subvert by mirroring the originals, "while at the same time make the mirroring visible to the point of transforming its effects."

You need to have read The Bloody Chamber and Other Stories by Angela Carter before diving into this academic study. Bacchilega relies heavily upon Carter's retellings in every chapter. You can get by without being familiar with the other modern writers, though it's easy to find the short stories she uses online.

This is an excellent study for those interested in fairy tale research on gender. It is dense, particularly the introduction, but worth tackling.
