Good for test prep

This book is very good for test prep for the in-training, or scored, ASA exam. Chapters are broken down in sections that are either by subspecialty or topic-genre. The end-chapter answer sections are a little less than complete for my taste but a good cross-reference text should fill in the gaps just fine.

All in all, Jesus Calling, seemed to be an obvious attempt by our spiritual Adversary to get an even further foothold inside the Christian church. "Another Jesus" Calling asks the question, Is the "Jesus" of Jesus Calling,the biblical Jesus Christ, or is it a false christ deceiving many? Given the fact that millions of copies of Jesus Calling, have already sold, the answer to that question needs to be found. Warren Smith gives us the documentation and biblical references needed to find that answer. "For if he that cometh preacheth another Jesus, whom we have not preached, or if ye receive another spirit, which ye have not received, or another gospel, which ye have not accepted, ye might well bear with him." Why do Christians believe they should practice the "presence" of Jesus? Because it promises them increased intimacy with God, thus bypassing the Cross. It does seem to fill a spiritual void and/or an emotional need. And it is an easy device. Under these new teachings, believers no longer need to trouble themselves about confessing besetting sins in their lives. Instead, this new voice of "Jesus" speaks rosy promises of guidance and transformation, even wealth and power. This "Jesus" even promises co-creative power, the ability to transform the world by our meditative attitudes. By concentrating on the words "be still," believers learn that we can even become God.

Smith's critiques all of this in a brief well-laid-out 176-page book. This is Warren Smith at his best - his easy folksy style renders hard concepts accessible and understandable. Each chapter is very brief and to the point. Smith raises Ten Concerns about the original book God Calling, which entered the Christian world in 2005, and Twenty Concerns about Sarah Young's Jesus Calling, which has more recently taken the evangelical world by storm. Is Jesus indeed speaking a new word to us today? Or is this the voice of "another Jesus" who is calling upon the world to laugh at the future? Smith's analyses are insightful.

Sarah Young's "Jesus" encourages believers to gain more spirituality through creative visualization. This "Jesus" flatters her readers with florid speeches such as "Let My gold-tinged Love wash over you and soak into the depths of your being" and "When your Joy in Me meet My Joy in you, there are fireworks of heavenly ecstasy. This same passionate "Jesus" is rapidly gaining traction elsewhere in the evangelical world. He offers spiritual experiences that are addictive and mind-altering, but not based on the truth taught in God's Word the Bible. He promises intimacy without repentance, spirituality without salvation, and communion without regeneration. Nevertheless many believe these new words.

recycled Hinduism

I wondered what all the Hoopla was about, as I couldn’t pass a bookstore that wasn't pushing Jesus Calling. I saw the book at Wal-Mart. I read one of the shorter pages at random. The first thing that struck me was the sheer saccharin nature of the writing. But more than that, something sounded dreadfully wrong. I could not quite figure it out at the time, but tossed the book back on the shelf. Having read this book, I’ve found out what it was that bothered me.
Actually, having spent five and a half years living in a Vasishnava Hindu (Personalist - believes both God and you are eternally separate persons) monastery 40 years ago before I became a Christian, I caught something in the quotations that the author missed. Some of these statements are nothing more than paraphrased quotations from the Upanishads and Bhagavad Gita, Mayavada Hindu (Impersonalist) - God and you are oneness, not individuals, and that personality is an illusion you really should get over. Oh and the entire universe is an illusion, Ignore it and meditate on oneness.) ‘holy’ books. Which is not surprising since the New Age is based on a rewritten Mayavada Hinduism blended with Spiritualism (séances and that sort of thing) Buddhism and Taoism (a Chinese Impersonal philosophy religion), slightly rewritten to make it palatable to western ears.

A breath of fresh air

Warren B. Smith's "Another Jesus" Calling is a must read for Christians who are involved with, contemplating involvement in, or have questions relating to the God Calling and Jesus Calling devotionals. Smith contrasts the messages from Sarah Young's "Jesus" with quotes from the Biblical Jesus. This contrast reveals the New Age foundation for Young's book. Smith's book is extremely well written, but I especially appreciated the organization of the information which makes "Another Jesus" Calling a wonderful reference book of New Age terminology that seems to be creeping in to Christian books and churches. This is necessary reading for anyone in church leadership.

Eye opener

Amazing he can continue on his subject and it is always fresh. I did not know about the author of Jesus Calling, and thus was educated by Mr. Smith. Floored me to walk into my local Christian bookstore to see this book all over the place. Apparently there is no discernment today. People are so un-biblically-educated, that they do not know a false Christ from the real deal. Warren, really helps set one straight with this book.

Best prehosp pharm book out there

Dr. Guy is a phenomenal educator and his pharm book is hands-down the best one out there--not just for paramedics but for all critical care transport professionals. It's well-laid out, concise, topical and easy to use in both clinical practice and as a teaching reference. Dr. Guy understands what it's like to be out on the streets (what, you mean our patients *don't* read the textbook?) and his case studies reflect that practical applicability. And let's face it, pharm can be a little boring, but Dr. Guy's mix of humor and expertise makes it kinda fun. Our flight crews often listen to his podcasts on the way back to base as quick, effective reviews of patho and pharm. This book and its accompanying Podcasts should be standard curriculum in any paramedic program. I would give this book six stars if I could.

Must have for any medic

Dr. Guy offers his vast insight and knowledge on pharmacology to EMS providers on iTunes and now in paperback. His podcast, which are similiar to chapters in the book, are also excellent and I HIGHLY recommend them to any prehospital providers. The information he gives on medications most frequently used, routes and doses is up to date and easy to understand. Medication errors are becoming a common occurance and under stressful situations, even the most seasoned medic can make a critical error. Dr. Guy provides us with the upper hand in patient safety and advanced medication education.

As a book fanatic, this is my favorite paramedic book. Not only great pharmacology, but great scenarios for "real life" situations. You get to make the call, and read on and see if you were right. Cannot rate highly enough, GOOD INVESTMENT.

The growth of email and text messages, among other innovations, has made time management at work more of a challenge. Keeping up with all of this simultaneous communication can become counterproductive. Business coach Crenshaw (founder, Fresh Juice Strategy) addresses the myths about multitasking and argues that it can in fact cost valuable time to employees. Crenshaw frames his book in the form of a fictional case study: "Phil," a consultant, is about to meet with the manager of retail clothing chain "GreenGarb: Clothes Mother Nature Intended" about improving employees' time management skills. Crenshaw's point is that the notion of multitasking is a false construct that costs both time and money. In fact, employees are "switch tasking" (switching back and forth between two or more tasks). Crenshaw claims that "background tasking" (doing two or more tasks, with only one of them requiring mental effort) could be more efficient and effective. Currently, employees lose time owing to interruptions by coworkers, distractions from new technologies, lack of attention to colleagues when they are speaking, and juggling home and work. The author also provides exercises for employees to measure their efficiency and effective use of time. Bibliographic citations are included, but a glossary would have been helpful. Einstein was quoted as saying something like, "if you cannot explain it in simple terms, you do not know it well enough." I promise you Mr. Crenshaw knows his subject matter and explains it in story fashion and in simple yet so eloquently. My knowledge took a great leap with a short read.

Also, I highly advise this read for every manager and anyone like mean who is involved in process or performance improvement.

A quick, simple and worthwhile read

This is a simple little parable in the same vein as the One Minute Manager series. It is very quick and easy to read and has a couple of very practical activities. The thrust of the book is that while it is possible to switch between different tasks very quickly and give the illusion of multitasking, it is, in fact, a very inefficient strategy. What we are actually doing is switch tasking or background tasking.

No it is not a generational thing as our brain does not evolve that quickly and, sorry ladies, there is no evidence, other than urban myth anecdotal evidence, that women can multitask and men cannot. To do two things at once is to do both things poorly.

I always thought being a multi-tasker was something to be PROUD of - after reading this book - I'm ashamed of thinking that way - and now try to devote myself fully to the task at hand and not be distracted. I'm also fully aware of others who do this to me - and I find it irritating to say the least!!!

ONE OF THE OLD TIME PIONEERS

My first indication this book existed was a chapter, entitled The Making of a Scout, that Ole Hosstail (Joe Austell Small) ran in TRUE WEST magazine back around August, 1966.

Charles Goodnight was many things in the Texas Panhandle, pioneer, ranchman, Indian fighter, homesteader, leader and all around man 'with the bark on. One of the outstanding things he did, among all his other activities, was his work with the Bison (buffalo) saving a herd but also in achieving the 'cattalo' a cross between range cattle and the bison.

This book was already 20 some years old when it crossed my trail, and though I have a good hardcover copy, it is a second printing. But no matter which copy one may have, it is definately a prime source of information and no small classic in its own right.

In September, 2007, the University of Oklahoma will publish a newer biography of Charles Goodnight by William T. Hagan. Though having much fewer pages it will no doubt be worth having on a reader's western shelf as well.

No matter what your western reading interest concerning the west, Charles Goodnight is almost a must read.

About the Author
Joseph R. Dominick received his undergraduate degree from the University of Illinois and his Ph.D. from Michigan State University in 1970. He taught for four years at Queens College of the City University of New York before coming to the College of Journalism and Mass Communication at the University of Georgia where, from 1980 to 1985, he served as head of the Radio-TV-Film Sequence. Dr. Dominick is the author of three books in addition to The Dynamics of Mass Communication and has published more than thirty articles in scholarly journals. From 1976 to 1980, Dr. Dominick served as editor of the Journal of Broadcasting. He has received research grants from the National Association of Broadcasters and from the American Broadcasting Company and has consulted for such organizations as the Robert Wood Johnson Foundation and the American Chemical Society.

Lengthy and Boring

If you have to get this book for class, be prepared for a long, dull read. I enjoyed the history sections for each medium, but the book tries very hard to get 20 pages per chapter, and spends a lot of time defining things that the average college student would already know. I have not used the dvd, so unfortunately I don't know if that's any easier than reading the chapters.

Good Textbook for my College Class

I was required to buy this book for my Journalism 1 class in college. It has a great online student center and the material covers a wide variety of topics. I thought this book was more interesting than most of the textbooks I have had to buy for school. It also comes with a CD-Rom that enhances the material.

Unnecessarily lengthy, awkwardly formatted

I rented the Kindle Edition for the semester. So far I've read the first three chapters -- roughly 75 pages. In order to get to the multitudes of useful information it contains, you have to wade through loads of unnecessary exposition. The author commonly provides five or six extra sentences to explain a concept as simple as what "meaning" means. I hate to cut corners when reading a textbook, especially if I paid the full amount for it, but this one sort of demands it. If you're not good at skimming, and you have to read this book, you're about to learn how.

Also, can someone please explain to me why an author would place a timeline at the beginning of a chapter, and then explain what it is 20 PAGES LATER? Whose bright idea was that?

ALSO, a student can easily feel discouraged from reading a textbook when he or she opens up to the first page of the first chapter and sees an enormous block of text sized so small s/he can barely read it. That's how the entire book is formatted, with some pictures and sidenotes here and there. Good times.

But, there are some gems of information within. Lucky for you, if you get the Kindle Edition, or are really good at skimming, you can spot the general location of all the useful information by locating the bolded keywords contained in the Chapter Reviews. Also, there's a summary of the main points at the end of each chapter.

It is amazing how such a small book can elicit so many emotions from the reader as Ms. Jax vividly relates the deeper understandings she has formed as a result of her travels both here in the USA and her many trips abroad. Ms. Jax eloquently expresses her deeply felt observations of the cultures of which she is writing. It is clear that things are not always the way the powers that be would like one to perceive them. It is also clear that these travels have resulted in a deeper search for understanding herself through time. I highly recommend you read this book to see the world through one travelers eyes. You will be surprised at what you discover.

Journey of Self

This little work, so much more than a book about travel, reflects and reveals many deep personal insights about the author's psyche. There are physical places described, of course, some far off and some nearer by. Some are magnificent and others vile and dangerous, but all are seen and depicted in the author's gentle, vivid and eloquent style. It is a journey of self, presented as a parallel process in the author's reflections about the countries and places she has visited. Throughout her journeys, she peers deeply into her own soul to make sense of what she observes in the context of who she is and who she has become.

On trips taken for business or with no purpose other than to explore, there is a deep and poetic nostalgia evident for old experiences and for relationships lost, and an enduring sadness and longing for a love that can no longer be and for a child that was never born. Along the way, the author observes humanity and inhumanity, inequities among nations and people and the further oppression of the already downtrodden. But there is also joy, insight, satisfaction and acknowledgement, buttressed by the author's own struggle for gender congruence. Lest one think this short work is depressing, it is not. It stands as a realistic lament that although life has moved on and taken the bloom, dreams and hopes of youth, it still holds the hopeful promise of many good journeys to come.

The Soulful Traveler is this summer's MUST READ. Rene Jax will take you on a journey through exotic places around the world and expose you to the gentler side of human nature. As i joined Rene on her expedition to these great locations, I found myself lost in thought of my own journeys through this place called "Life". When I came upon the last page, I was sad that this brief moment of reflection was ending. I am hopeful that Rene will take time in the near future to create another masterpiece for her dedicated followers.

I have 3 Canon cameras and I have purchased one of these books for each one. Very good and very comprehensive. Great book to learn things that aren't in manuals. There is only a PDF file for the manual for the G15 so this book acts as my instruction book also.

Great resource!

I've always felt that the actual owner's manual on camera equipment should be much more intensive and user-friendly. This makes me sort of resentful that I feel the need to buy a separate book for my new camera. (The G15 didn't even come with a physical manual, just an file on a disc.) However, this book goes above and beyond a normal owner's manual. It is easy to read and to find what you want to know on the fly. I've been extremely happy with both the camera and the Guide. If you buy it I hope it is as helpful for you and thank you for taking the time to read my review.

A dream come true!

Yes this book gets right to the point! In a bullitt type outline with pictures it is easy to navigate the G 15 at last. There are even extra tips and common mistakes are pointed out. It is smaller in size, but the print is not small, so it is very portable. I think this is the best book on this camera out there, and the most useable. I am sorry to see it is not readily available... I have no idea why. I would like to thank the author for writing such a comprehensive book without a lot of extra verbiage...
