BUTTERFLY SPREAD VARIATION

The Put Broken Wing Butterfly Spread aka Skip Strike Butterfly Spread is the opposite of the Call Broken Wing Butterfly strategy. They are both used when traders expect a stocks’ price to remain the same but in the case of the Put Broken Wing it is used as protection against an upwards breakout. In other words, it does not lose money if the price goes up but it will lose more money than a regular Butterfly Spread if it happens to go down. There are 3 steps involved in the execution of the Put Broken Wing Butterfly Spread:
1. Buy 1 In the Money Put option
2. Sell 2 At the Money Put options
3. Buy 1 Out of the Money Put option
Maximum profit is reached if at the expiration of the option the price closes at the middle strike price. A Level 4 options trading account that allows the use of credit spreads is required to use this strategy. I highly recommend Michael Young’s books on the various trading strategies to anyone interested in trading on the stock market.

I found this e-book pretty easy to understand. I love the ITM/ATM put and OTM call examples that were used. I was able to get an understanding of the possible outcome as well as the risks and rewards associated with the Put Broken Wing Butterfly Spread. Incomplete

This book is at its best when explaining the theory. Jarrow provides lots of very explicit examples that really help to illuminate the ideas. Unfortunately, the reader is left to fend for himself when it comes to implementing the theory. The author simply breezes over how to estimate and calibrate these models. There is a rich--but abstruse--literature on how to apply HJM models. This book would be greatly improved if it covered this aspect of the topic with the same care and detail as is devoted to the theoretical segment of the book.

HMJ model of interest-rate derivatives

This book is a must for any financial engineer interested in learning the HMJ model of interest-rate instruments. The HMJ model is an arbitrage model based on the instaneous forward rates. The book starts with a brief introduction to fixed-income securities followed by a rigorous treatment of binomial trees. Claim replication is then addressed through trading strategies. The instruments treated are coupon bonds,forward,futures,options and exotics. I found useful to derive the mathematical statements as I was reading the book to acquaint myself with the notation and the mathematical concepts. The beauty of the model is worth the effort. It would have been nice to include a more thorough treatment of mortage-backed securities and derivatives subject to default. Other models ( Ho-Lee , Hull-White , Vasicek ) are also briely mentioned. The parameter estimation also deserved more space since a correct estimation is more important to pricing than a clever choice of the model. To conclude: a recommended introduction to HJM + additional readings will allow the financial engineer to grasp the fundamentals of the fixed-income universe.

This book will definitely replace all the books on interest rate modeling- Brigo Murcurio etc. The book starts at an elementary level, explains every details of the concept, and then develop the subject matter one needs to know to be a pro in interest rate modeling. Even the simple concepts like duration, convexity are clearly explained that many other books take pages, and even then not very clear. Buy it, Read it! After all you will be learning from a master! The clarity and the writing style are simply great! Good job Prof. Jarrow!

Aided by previously undisclosed correspondence, Grosskurth (Havelock Ellis, 1980, etc.; Humanities and Psychoanalytic Thought/Univ. of Toronto) takes the story of the brilliant, wildly neurotic men who contrived to safeguard Freudian thought and turns it into an intriguing psychological saga-cum-tragicomedy of manners. The Secret Committee, conceived in 1912 as a united front against the apostasy of Carl Jung and sealed by Freud's bestowal of antique intaglios, became, notes Grosskurth, ``a metaphor for the psychoanalytic movement itself...a cult of personality'' with Freud acting as both ``guru'' and distant, demanding father. Avidly submitting one another (and assorted romantic interests) to frequently scathing and self-justifying formal and informal analyses, Austrians Otto Rank and Hans Sachs, Hungarian Sandor Ferenczi, German Karl Abraham, and Welshman Ernest Jones, joined later by Russian-born German Max Eitingon, functioned as ``surrogate sons'' within a strikingly dysfunctional family--marked by sabotage, manipulation, and ``aggressively infantile'' jostling. Treating her story as a study of group pathology, Grosskurth uses pointed quotes to show how all of her subjects, especially Freud, used jargon as a cover for real feeling. More emotionally involving, though less theoretically acute, than Janet Sayers's study of the overlapping generation of women psychoanalysts (Mothers of Psychoanalysis--reviewed next issue), the work suffers from a curious reticence. Grosskurth avoids some potentially interesting paths (e.g., Freud's gelid relationship with his own sons) and develops her conclusions so carefully that they become anticlimactic. Great Insight into Freud and his Circle

This book was exactly what I was looking for in my research into the formation and dissolution of Freud's inner circle. The book is written in clear language that will appeal to a broad range of readers. Interest in the subject matter is likely why I found it so valuable, however, readers with only passing interest could easily be drawn into the personalities and situations depicted in the book.

An Important Book About Freud and His "Secret Ring"

I have read this book a while ago, but now felt a need to give a review. Indeed, I did found it to be a fascinating reading, especially the correspondences between Freud and the members of the "Secret Committee." This book talks about the history of this secret committee, which was made to ensure the continuation of the existence of the psychoanalysis movement. This committee was initially consisted of Ernest Jones, Karl Abraham, Otto Rank, Hanns Sachs, Sandor Ferenczi, with Freud as its "ringleader" (Max Eitingon didn't joined until 1919).

I really find it interesting that it wasn't Freud's idea to form the "Committee." It was Ernest Jones' suggestion that "a secret committee be formed as a Praetorian guard around Freud" and the "unstated" aim was to monitor Carl Jung and to maintain a watching brief in which they would report to Freud but the main task was to "preserve the purity of psychoanalytic theory." This has occurred in late 1912 when there were "disagreements" between Jung and Freud. Of course, Freud was very enthusiastic about it and was intrigued by the "secret" aspect of this committee. Freud used his own theory as a "loyalty oath" of this committee and any "rejection of any part of the theory meant personal rejection of him" and "anyone whose ideas differed from his own, Freud described as an 'enemy.'" (51, 53).

Whoa, talk about a cult.

However, this committee didn't last for long because the members didn't "get along with each other." The author pointed out that the "fantasy had been dissolved by the harsh reality of human beings unable to get along together" (195). The "last" meeting to which Freud participated was in mid-1926 and a year later, that committee "converted" into a group of officials of the International Association.

Other thing that is of an extremely disturbing note from reading this book is the event surrounding the death of Pauline Silberstein, the wife of Eduard Silberstein, an early friend of Freud's in late 19th century and who Freud was trying to "control." It certainly made me think that Freud had something to do with her death.

Finally, this book, well-written by Phyllis Grosskurth, is an interesting reading about Freud's life and his "secret committee" and how they enforced the "continence" of the psychoanalysis movement. Timothy D. Wilson (of Strangers to Ourselves: Discovering the Adaptive Unconscious) has pointed out that "an important part of the Freudian legacy was a rejection of the scientific method as a means of studying the mind." And, the "Secret Committee" was the powerful force behind the continuance of Freud's theory. A committee that was based on a bad seed: Narcissism.

From reading this book, one can certainly see Freud under a different light. I would recommend it.

About the Author
Karl Doenitz was commissioned into the Imperial German Navy in 1910 and was the architect of the U-boat war for the Atlantic. After the death of Adolf Hitler, Doenitz was named President and Supreme Commander of the Armed Forces.

An Excellent Account of Hitler's successor.

Ten Years and Twenty Days is a direct reference to the 10 years Karl Doenitz spent as a U Boat commander and the 20 days he spent as Hitler's successor as Fuhrer of Germany. I had stated previously in this review that the period related to his time in Spandau jail which was 10 years and I am grateful for being corrected on that point.

As an English boy born in 1950 and growing up in a post-war Britain, we would play games where the Germans always lost - just like Cowboys and Indians. Much later in life, I began to research various ships and shipwrecks through my scuba diving and the name of Karl Doenitz came up time and again. Over many years I came to respect this man for the way in which he conducted both himself and his branch of the war with Britain. I consider him to have been an honourable enemy of my country. Yes, he was convicted of War Crimes, but it says much for the respect that this man engendered that over 100 senior Allied Officers expressed their disappointment at his sentence. But then, to the victor go the spoils and the one man to succeed Hitler was never going to remain a free man when others were being executed!

Having read so many accounts of this once great Admiral before reading his own memoirs, it is clear to me he was convicted of no more a crime than "being one of the enemy" and it was for that he served his ten years at Spandau. Others, of course, were directly responsible for the great human atrocities of WW2 and it was they who were either sentenced to death of life imprisonment.

I am sure there are those who will disagree with my assessment of this man - and, indeed, their own assessment may be more accurate. Nevertheless, this book reveals a great deal about an honourable man and is one which should be read by all those with an interest in Karl Doenitz the German Naval Officer and Karl Doenitz the last Fuhrer - who's first task on succeeding Hitler was to seek peace.

Railroaded.

Doenitz was a "soldier" doing his job, and he was very good at it. With earlier and better support from Hitler he could have made our victory much more difficult and painful. He could have extended the war for a year or more cost, thousands if not millions of lives and possibly turned the British Isles into a smoking battlefield.
They say the difference between a "Patriot" and a "War Criminal" depends on whether your side that won or the one that lost. Doenitz spent ten years in prison as a result of being on the losing side. There were many, many criminals serving Hitler but Doenitz was not one of them.
I enjoyed the book as history and as an accurate a portrayal of the "Submarine War" as we are likely to find.

Full of facts about the U Boat War. Interesting things, like problems with magnetic torpedo detonators not working in Norway and because the US had identical problems with the torpedo detonators. Many more interesting things, like how Doenitz and Montgomery agreed for more time to let eastern refugees make it to the western sector before surrender, whereas Eisenhower had no such intensions. RMS Laconia incident, the ship had six inch guns like a warship. After being torpedoed, the British locked the Italian prisoners below, letting them drown. Also interesting is the fact that Doenitz wanted 300 submarines and never got them. Only 5% of steel was allocated for submarines. Most of the steel came from Sweden. And the fact that at the end of the war, the Enigma code was not broken due to higher encoding complexity (from allied archives end of book).

I love Baroque architecture and the Decorative Arts

Russia had the resources (lots of gold) and the talented craftsmen to try to outdo Western Europe. They succeeded. I’ve toured both areas.

This is the most comprehensive book on Tsarskoye Selo (Catherine Palace) that I’ve seen. Having toured this awesome Baroque palace and been overwhelmed by its over-the-top decor, this book conveys that feeling. You’ll marvel at the beauty and workmanship.

It contains the only photo I’ve ever seen of the 1000’ long palace- side by side pages (23” long). The photography is first rate- you can see the decorative details. 289 out 336 photos are color. Many are full page. A lot are close up details so you can appreciate the craftsmanship. Parquet-patterned floors, marquetry furniture, semi-precious stones, gold leaf, crystal chandeliers, and silk upholstery scenes are just some of the decorative arts.

I even enjoyed the 18th and 19th century oil paintings of the rooms because they look like photographs. The book also has photos of the walls of the Amber Room. The commentary is extensive and detailed. There is a lot to learn.

Great music for the beginner

Great music for the beginning child. Our daughter, 8 years old, has been playing for 2 years and has taken to these songs, they are, at times, a bit difficult for her, but not so much so that she gets discouraged.

Great book about how God wants us to not fear. Everyone feels fear, but we have to decide either to accept the fear or reject it. God has not given us a spirit of fear, but of power and of love and of a sound mind.
